The Cincinnati Reds are back to .500 and currently in the NL Central basement. This is hardly where Reds fans expected their favorite team to be at this point in the season, especially after starting the year with 20-11 record. But Cincinnati has now dropped three straight games and 13 of their last 17.
Poor performance — both from the lineup and the pitching staff — is to blame for the Reds' struggles of late, but the growing number of injuries the club has endured cannot be ignored. While Reds manager Terry Francona offered an encouraging update for injured slugger Eugenio Suárez, the news was not so positive for Jose Trevino.
Reds News: Jose Trevino sidelined with hamstring strain
Trevino left Saturday's game against the Cleveland Guardians sooner than expected and was replaced by Tyler Stephenson. After the game, it was revealed that he suffered a hamstring injury, though the extent wouldn't be known until further imaging was completed.
Cincinnati got the full report ahead of Monday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies, and Trevino was diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain that will likely keep him on the shelf for three to four weeks. This is Trevino's second trip to the IL this season. At the moment, journeyman backstop P.J. Higgins will act as the team's backup catcher behind Stephenson.
While Trevino's bat has been underwhelming this season, he's a reliable catcher who's well known for his glove and his ability to communicate effectively with the pitching staff. The Reds will miss his veteran leadership, and his absence will no doubt increase the strain on Stephenson as the team's primary catcher.
Reds News: Mike Siani claimed by Orioles, Jake Fraley lands on Rays' IL
A pair of former Reds' outfielders were in the news earlier this week, but for different reasons. Former top prospect Mike Siani was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles, and longtime outfielder Jake Fraley will be out for up to two months following a sports hernia procedure.
Siani was a highly-touted prospect during his time in the Reds' organization. Known for his glove, not his bat, Siani made his MLB debut with Cincinnati in 2022. He later latched on with the St. Louis Cardinals, and most recently was with the Los Angeles Dodgers. After being DFA'd by LA, Siani was picked up by the O's, and he'll now take his career .221/.277/.270 slash line to Charm City.
Fraley spent three-plus seasons in Cincinnati before joining the Atlanta Braves and eventually the Tampa Bay Rays. He's appeared in 28 games for the AL East-leading Rays this season, but he'll be out of action for the next several weeks while recovering from surgery. Fraley's hitting .232 this season with two home runs in limited action.
