The Cincinnati Reds are oftentimes wary of handing out big contracts during free agency. Fans will bemoan the Reds' lack of spending and claim that the ownership group is cheap. And while those accusations may be true, Cincinnati does not have a great track record when it comes to free agent signings.

Names like Shogo Akiyama and Mike Moustakas still haunt the Reds' fanbase to this day. Even lesser names like Colin Moran, Hunter Strickland, Sean Doolittle, and Luke Weaver were not success stories during their tenure in the Queen City.

Reds News: Former free agent bust Wil Myers retires

Wil Myers' time with the Reds will not conjure up fond memories. The longtime San Diego Padres outfielder and former Rookie of the Year signed a one-year deal with Cincinnati in 2023. Myers was supposed to be the Reds' everyday right fielder and many supposed he would crush 30-plus homers at Great American Ball Park. Instead, Myers crashed and burned, hitting just .189/.257/.283 before being DFA'd after only 37 games.

As it turns out, Myers' game on May 23, 2023 against the St. Louis Cardinals will be his last. Myers officially hung up his cleats this weekend after 11 years in the big leagues. The former third-round pick will end his playing career with 1,100 games played and 156 home runs.

Reds News: Minor League outfielder Peyton Burdick released

According to the Louisville Bats' transaction log, outfielder Peyton Burdick has been released. The Ohio native joined the Reds' organization last season after being plucked off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.

Burdick never appeared in a Major League game for the Reds in 2024. The 27-year-old played 47 games for the Bats and hit just .189/.291/.342 with seven home runs and 16 RBI. Burdick is now a free agent.

Reds News: Jose Trevino returns to his old jersey number

Jose Trevino will be wearing No. 56 when he makes his Reds' debut in 2025. The new Cincinnati backstop previously wore No. 56 during his time with the Texas Rangers, but for the past three seasons in the Bronx, donned No. 39 for the New York Yankees.

The Reds traded reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson to the Yankees in exchange for Trevino just last week. Cincinnati had been on the lookout for a new backup catcher and settled on the former Gold Glove Award-winner after the free agent market became scarce. Trevino is expected to split time behind the dish with Tyler Stephenson in 2025.
