The Cincinnati Reds came up empty in their quest for a Silver Slugger nomination this season. The National League Silver Slugger finalists were revealed earlier this week, and not a single Reds player was among those chosen.
Next year, however, might be a little different. On can assume that Elly De La Cruz fell just short of being named a finalist among the NL shortstops, and with a full season under his belt in 2026, it's quite possible that Sal Stewart could be among the top-3 hitters at his position next season.
Stewart made his Major League debut this past September and was part of the Reds' playoff roster. Stewart's first taste of the big leagues saw the 21-year-old post a .255/.293/.545 slash line with a .294 ISO and 124 wRC+ in just 18 games with Cincinnati last season.
Top Reds prospect Sal Stewart could take a Silver Slugger in 2026
It remains to be seen whether or not Stewart breaks camp with the Reds next March, but after seeing how quickly he ascended to the major leagues last year, it's difficult to see Cincinnati keeping the young slugger in the minors for very long (if at all).
Questions will no doubt arise — and likely be answered before Opening Day — about what position Stewart will play in 2026. Interestingly enough, Stewart's versatility could actually work in his favor. He has experience at both first and third base, and has tried his hand is second during his time in the minor leagues.
The Silver Slugger is awarded to a player at each position in both the NL and AL, but those who play multiple positions can also be nominated. A utility winner qualifies with a minimum of 100 games with at least 20 games played at two or more positions. That could definitely be a role that Stewart fills next season.
The Reds didn't see much slugging in 2025, but are hoping for more of it next season. Stewart and De La Cruz will be two players to keep an eye on, but the Reds fans are hoping see players like Matt McLain, Spencer Steer, and others bounce back in 2026 as well.
