Reds' lone non-tender candidate is back in the fold for 2025
He's back!
The Cincinnati Reds ended the suspense early on Friday. With the non-tender deadline set for 8 p.m. ET, the Reds got one of their biggest question marks out of the way just before sunset. The Reds agreed to a one-year, $2.4 million deal with utility infielder Santiago Espinal.
After ditching first baseman Ty France and outfielder Nick Martini, Espinal was the lone non-tender candidate remaining on the Reds roster. Cincinnati could still make some other moves before the deadline passes, but bringing back Espinal will help solidfy the Reds' infield next season.
Espinal became a key member in the Reds lineup after Matt McLain was declared out with a shoulder injury. Noelvi Marte's 80-game suspension only made Espinal more valuable, as the former Toronto Blue Jays infielder saw time at both second and third base during the 2024 season. There were even times when the veteran lined up in the outfield.

Given how badly Marte struggled upon his return from the restricted list, it wouldn't be surprising to see Espinal get an opportunity to start the season as the Reds' Opening Day third baseman. That said, it's much more likely that Espinal takes on a utility role.
Espinal's return in 2025 will only fuel the Jonathan India trade rumors that have dominated the past week. The Reds have been linked to Kansas City Royals pitcher Brady Singer, and India is still said to be on their radar. Having Espinal back in the fold gives Cincinnati a little insurance in the event they decide to move the 2021 NL Rookie of the Year.
MLB Trade Rumors estimated that Espinal would be in line to make $4 million in 2025. In fact, the $2.4 million that Espinal will take home next season actually represents a pay cut. The slick fielding second baseman made $2.73 million in 2024. No matter the price, Reds fans will be happy to have Espinal back next season.
