The Cincinnati Reds dropped the series finale of the three-game set against the New York Yankees on Wednesday night by the final score of 7-1. Reds starter Brady Singer posted a season-high with nine strikeouts, but the right-hander allowed four runs on six hits while walking three Yankees batters. Singer left after five innings, but there was concern for the Reds' righty just before his exit.
During the top of the fifth inning, Reds catcher Jose Trevino noticed something off about Singer's delivery. Trevino looked over to the Reds dugout, and once play was stopped, headed out to the mound to check on his battery mate.
Singer and Trevino were then joined by Reds manager Terry Francona and head athletic trainer Sean McQueeney. Thankfully, Singer stayed in to finish the inning and Francona offered an update on his condition after the game.
Reds starter Brady Singer was battling a mild toe injury vs. Yankees
Francona said in the postgame press conference, "He (Singer) thought he had a blister on his toe. When he came out, his toenail was kind of digging in to the end of his shoe. I think they feel like they can alleviate that for his next start."
Singer was lifted after five innings in favor of Reds reliever Ian Gibaut. Unfortunately, the wheels fell off after Singer left. Gibaut allowed two runs on three hits before giving way to Taylor Rogers. The lefty got Cincinnati out of a jam in the sixth, but not before New York had taken a 6-1 lead.
It sounds as if Singer will be able to return to the mound for his next start. In all likelihood, that will come next Tuesday at Fenway Park when the Reds battle the Boston Red Sox. With Wade Miley, Hunter Greene, and others on the IL at the moment, the last thing the Reds can afford is another injury to their starting rotation.
Noelvi Marte joins Austin Hays on rehab assignment with the Chattanooga Lookouts
Noelvi Marte joined Austin Hays at Double-A Chattanooga on Wednesday. The Reds third baseman suffered an oblique injury over a month ago and had been rehabbing at the team's complex in Goodyear, Arizona.
Marte went 0-for-4 on Wednesday night for the Chattanooga Lookouts, but was hit by a pitch and eventually scored a run. The infielder has been sidelined since early-May, and it's likely that his rehab assignment will last a little longer than Hays' stay in southeastern Tennessee. There's a chance that Hays will back in the Reds lineup on Friday.
During Wednesday's broadcast, FanDuel Sports Network's Jim Day also gave an update on Reds pitcher Carson Spiers. The right-hander has been dealing with a shoulder impingement for the last several weeks, but according to Day, Spiers is ahead of schedule and is expected to begin a rehab assignment soon.
