The Cincinnati Reds have been bitten by the injury early and often in 2025. A number of key players either began the year on the injured list or eventually found their way there. But things are beginning to turn around for the ole Redlegs.
On Tuesday, the Reds activated a trio of players from the IL. Matt McLain, Austin Hays, and Alexis Diaz returned to the active roster ahead of the Reds game against the Seattle Mariners. Diaz got into the game, McLain drew three walks and scored two runs, and Hays went 2-for-4 with a three-run blast to put the Reds on top in the fifth inning.
In addition to the aforementioned returns, Cincinnati could soon be welcoming back to more key members of this year's ball club. And one of the Reds' top prospects was back on the diamond as well.
Reds News: Edwin Arroyo back in the Chattanooga Lookouts' starting lineup
Edwin Arroyo spent all of last season on the injured list after suffering a shoulder injury at the tail-end of spring training. Arroyo began this season at Double-A Chattanooga, but was removed from a game earlier this month after coming up lame while trying to stretch a single into a double.
Arroyo appeared in just two games and hadn't seen the field since April 5, but was back in the Chattanooga Lookouts' starting lineup on Tuesday, batting leadoff, and playing shortstop. The Reds are hoping to see a healthy season from Arroyo, who's considered one of the best defenders in Cincinnati's farm system. The 21-year-old began the season going 5-for-9 with an RBI.
Reds News: Tyler Stephenson's rehab assignment could begin next week
The Reds have McLain and Hays back from the injured list, but are still missing Tyler Stephenson's bat in the lineup. The Reds starting catcher has been out of action since spring training after suffering an oblique injury midway through camp. Stephenson was taking ground balls in the field last week, and appears ready for the next step in his rehab.
Stephenson participated in batting practice on Tuesday, and when the Reds go on the road to Baltimore in a few days, Stephenson will head to Columbus. The Louisville Bats will be in town to play the Columbus Clippers this weekend, and Stephenson plans to get some pregame workouts in before officially beginning his rehab assignment next week.
Reds News: Wade Miley's rehab assignment is imminent
The wily left-hander Wade Miley may beat Stephenson back to the field. The Reds' southpaw, who signed a minor-league deal with Cincinnati this past offseason, pitched three innings in Arizona on Tuesday night. If his recovery goes well, Miley is likely to begin a rehab assignment sometime later this week, or early next week at the latest.
The Reds have a ton of quality pitching depth — both in the major and the minor leagues. Miley won't need too many outings to get up to speed, meaning that fans could soon see a shakeup in the reds starting rotation.
