Reds Injury News: Spencer Steer update, Tony Santillan rehab, Brandon Williamson

The Cincinnati Reds have several key players on the injured list at the moment, but life without Spencer Steer has been extremely difficult. Steer has been one of the team's most versatile fielders this season, but he's also a vital piece of the Reds' lineup.

After watching Cincinnati score just six runs on their way to being swept out of D.C. at the hands of the Washington Nationals, there's little doubt that the Reds could've used Steer's bat in the lineup. He's tied for fourth on the team in home runs (16) and slugging percentage (.421), and is one of just five players on the roster with an OPS+ above 100.

Reds Injury News: Spencer Steer to be re-evaluated

Steer has been on the 10-day IL since the end of July. He suffered a right wrist sprain while making an awkward swing during a game against the St. Louis Cardinals on July 26. Further testing revealed that he tore the sheath of a tendon, and was prescribed two weeks of rest while wearing a protective brace.

That brace is slated to come off, and Steer can then begin mobility exercises with the hopes of returning before the 2026 season comes to an end. Rehab will obviously be necessary, and the team's place in the standings may determine whether or not the Reds (and Steer) conclude that a swift return to the field is worth the risk.

Reds Injury News: Tony Santillan rehab assignment could be up next

One of the Reds' best relief pitchers, Tony Santillan, has been sidelined since the end of the June with an oblique strain. These types of injuries are always tricky to navigate, but the hulking right-hander is focused on returning sometime during the second half of the 2026 season.

Santillan threw a bullpen session during the team's road series in Washington D.C., and he's likely to throw another one sometime early this week before the club decides where he'll begin an upcoming rehab assignment. The Reds have missed Santillan's reliable right arm, but there's hope that he could return to the bullpen before the end of August.

Reds Injury News: Brandon Williamson scheduled for another rehab outing

Brandon Williamson's first rehab start with the Louisville Bats did not go so well. The left-hander was unable to get out of the first inning after allowing five runs on two hits and walking four batters during last week's game against the St. Paul Saints.

Williamson will get a reprieve this week when the Bats return home to Louisville Slugger Field. The 28-year-old is slated to throw upwards of 60 pitches and should be on the mound for Tuesday's game against the Toledo Mud Hens. With Chase Burns quickly approaching an innings limit and Hunter Greene now shut down due to elbow surgery, Cincinnati will need Williamson down the stretch.
