Reds hype train around Rece Hinds is hiding other hot bats

Other Reds outfielders are lighting it up down in the minors.

Outfielder Rece Hinds was left off the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day roster and optioned to Triple-A to begin the 2026 season, but he might not be there much longer. Hinds was one of the Reds' standouts during spring training, and he's carried that performance over to the start of the minor-league season with the Louisville Bats.

Hinds has gotten off to a rip-roaring start with a .440/.516/.920 slash line and three home runs during the Bats' first six games of the season. He's been responsible for two walk-off wins and has surprisingly balanced his strikeouts (5) with walks (7) — something that's haunted him in years past.

JJ Bleday, Blake Dunn, and Rece Hinds are sizzling in the Reds' minors leagues

But Hinds isn't the only Bats' outfielder who's come out of the gates scorching hot. JJ Bleday is hitting .333/.500/.557 with three doubles and a home run in five games this season. The Reds signed Bleday to a free-agent contract this winter, and despite an impressive spring training, he was optioned to Triple-A to begin the season.

Blake Dunn, who was also one of the last roster cuts this spring, has also gotten off to a good start at Triple-A Louisville. The 27-year-old is 11-for-24 with three doubles and a 1.177 OPS through the Bats' first six games.

Far too many fans forget that Dunn was named the Reds' Minor League Player in 2023. Splitting time between High-A Dayton and Double-A Chattanooga that year, Dunn racked up 23 home runs and 54 stolen bases while hitting .312/.425/.522 over 124 games.

Hinds, Bleday, and Dunn are above-average athletes. Hinds is best suited for right field — a position currently occupied by Noelvi Marte — while both Bleday and Dunn can play all three outfield spots. Top prospect Hector Rodriguez is another young outfielder to keep an eye on, but he's only hitting .200/.360/.300 to begin the season.

At the moment, Hinds, Bleday, and Dunn are all stuck in the minor leagues, but any number of changes could be made in short order. The Reds made some early-season changes in 2025 — optioning Jacob Hurtubise and Will Benson back to Triple-A before the end of the April — and several players could be on a short leash this season as well.

Marte, TJ Friedl, Matt McLain, Spencer Steer, Tyler Stephenson, and Jose Trevino have all gotten off to horrific starts in 2026. It's still very early, and there's no need to panic, but some wholesale changes could be on the way if Hinds, Bleday, and Dunn keep raking, and those aforementioned players continue to flounder.
