When the Cincinnati Reds acquired catcher Jose Trevino from the New York Yankees this offseason, his reputation as a top defensive backstop preceded him. As a partner to Tyler Stephenson’s explosive bat, the move made perfect sense. However, as is typical for a vet on a Terry Francona team, Trevino’s greatest asset is his wisdom and ability to help the Reds’ young prospects.

Trevino has taken to several of the younger players in camp. He has spent time getting to know not only pitchers’ arsenals, but also their communication styles, backgrounds, and personalities. More importantly, though, Trevino has started to connect with catching prospect Alfredo Duno.

Jose Trevino’s mentorship could accelerate Alfredo Duno’s rise through the Reds minor leagues

While Duno isn’t on the spring training roster, he is in Goodyear training with the team and will be eligible to participate in the Spring Breakout games. Just 19 years old, Duno was ranked the 29th-best prospect in baseball by FanGraphs and will likely be among the Reds’ most promising players for years to come. However, a high ranking doesn’t necessarily guarantee success; that’s where Trevino comes in.

Duno has recently come under scrutiny because of his size. While his large frame enables him to generate impressive power, it could limit him behind the plate. The Reds have had trouble developing homegrown catchers, so it would benefit the club if Duno were to stick to the position. Trevino, who won a Platinum Glove Award in 2022 with the Yankees, may be able to assist Duno in framing and positioning to compensate for a lack of mobility and quickness.

Duno has also battled injuries over his young career. Likewise, Trevino has missed time due to injuries since his All-Star breakout in 2022. Imagine the pair rehabbing together and sharing insights into the Reds’ pitching prospects. If this partnership continues to develop, Cincinnati could reap the rewards for many years to come.
