Fans cannot say that the Cincinnati Reds haven't been relevant this offseason. Whether it's adding a new manager, making a trade for a frontline starter, or retaining desirable talent, Cincinnati has been actively trying to turn themselves into a playoff contender.
It doesn't seem like the Reds are done yet. New manager Terry Francona has his eyes set on turning the ship around in Cincinnati, and although this is all exciting, it seems like the front office is overlooking one glaring blemish on the current roster. The Reds need to bolster their bullpen, but it does not appear to be a top priority.
Reds' focus on outfield additions has Cincy ignoring bullpen needs
It's been no secret that the Reds want to add an outfielder. There were whispers of Cincinnati trading for Kyle Tucker before he was shipped to the Chicago Cubs. Cincinnati has also been linked to Luis Robert Jr. and Taylor Ward this offseason.
Though it would be great to acquire another bat, the Reds have a major need in the bullpen. Alexis Díaz recorded 28 saves last year, but it did not come very easy. Díaz posted a career-worst in ERA, FIP, and WHIP in 2024. As the pitcher who is supposed to be the star of the staff, this is not a great starting point for Cincinnati going into next season. If anything, it's a tad unnerving.
Buck Farmer pitched well with a sparkling a 3.04 ERA in 71 innings, but no other full-time Reds reliever had an earned run average that was within this vicinity. Farmer is currently a free agent. As a collective, the Reds' bullpen had a 4.09 ERA with 209 walks in 2024, both of which were among the bottom-third in the National League.
It's time for the Reds to begin conversations with some free agent relievers. There are still solid names on the market just waiting to make a deal. Tanner Scott, Carlos Estevez, and former Reds pitcher Jeff Hoffman are arguably three of the top relievers remaining.
It's nice to see the Reds attempting to make more moves this winter. Nabbing another outfielder is a great game plan for Krall and his staff. However, it is imperative to consider going after at least one top-tier reliever. If they can agree to terms with an All-Star arm, it could turn into a perfect offseason for a club that was not a contender just one year ago.
