Reds fans thought Phil Castellini was bad then Angels owner Arte Moreno spoke up

Phil, you're off the hook (sort of)!

Most Cincinnati Reds fans still haven't forgiven Phil Castellini for his foolish comments ahead of Opening Day back in 2022. Castellini, who's now the controlling owner of the Reds, famously asked fans, "Where ya gonna go?" This was on the heels of Cincinnati's front office selling off some of their top assets and cutting payroll as they entered a rebuild after winning 83 games in 2021.

And while Castellini's comments still irk some fans throughout Reds Country to this day, Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno may have topped them with his latest remarks. Moreno's Angels, much like the Reds in 2022, appear headed for a losing season in 2026, and his interview with the LA media last week has caused quite a stir.

Angels owner Arte Moreno may have made a bigger misstep than Reds owner Phil Castellini

Moreno was speaking about the fan experience at Angel Stadium and may have said more than he should have. According to the Angels' owner, surveys done by the team revealed that fans really don't care about winning.

“The number one thing fans want is affordability,” Moreno said. “They want affordability. They want safety, and they want a good experience when they come to the ballpark. Believe it or not, winning is not in their top five.”

It's important to note that Moreno later expanded on his initial comments, and suggested the baseball purists just want to win. But when asked about his top priority, Moreno said: “For me, I’ve always wanted to win. It’s just what’s the cost of winning right now?”

Those comments will undoubtedly give Reds fans 2022 vibes. Much like Cincinnati four years ago, Los Angeles has spent much of the offseason offloading bigger contracts (Taylor Ward and Anthony Rendon) and have focused their attention toward their budding, young stars like Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel. Much like Joey Votto in 2022, long-tenured Angels superstar Mike Trout is still along for the ride out in Anaheim.

Longtime sports broadcaster Jim Rome might've summed it up best when he said, "I know plenty of owners that don't really want to win, but I don't know any fans that don't really want to win."

Reds fans feel your pain, Angels fans. Hopefully there's brighter days ahead for the Halos, but this season looks like it's headed for disaster. Where are Angels fans gonna go?
