Cincinnati Reds outfielder Spencer Steer had some rather choice words for San Francisco Giants pitcher JT Brubaker during the latter stages of Wednesday's game. For those who can read lips, it was pretty obvious that Steer said, "F--- you. Throw the f----- ball." He then proceeded to lace a line drive into left field and could be seen jawing with Brubaker on his way to first base.
Prior to that pitch, Steer signaled timeout to home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott and his request was granted. Brubaker took objection, as he had already started his windup; though an argument could be made that he began his motion before making eye contact with the batter — something that's been a point of emphasis of late.
The timeout really seemed to get under the skin of Brubaker. He began shouting at Walcott from the mound, but was surprisingly not ejected as a result. As the at-bat continued, the former Pittsburgh Pirates hurler made sure to take his time with the 0-2 delivery.
Brubaker, who'd previously attempted to make a pitch with 13 seconds remaining on pitch timer, allowed the clock to go all the way down to about two seconds — as if yo prove a point. He then came to plate with a 96 mph heater in the bottom of the zone that Steer blistered into left field.
The ball was smoked at 94.5 mph and was Steer's second base hit of the game. Brubaker immedaitely began to argue with the home plate umpire once again, but was still not tossed. The Reds were in firm control at that point and went on to win the game by a final score of 8-3.
Reds' outfielder Spencer Steer showed some fire vs. Giants' pitcher JT Brubaker
The moment caught the attention of the Reds' social media team who shared a post to X that read, "ttyl" — an abbreviation for the phrase, "talk to you later." The post has since been removed.
Even the Reds' television broadcast picked up on the beef between Steer and Brubaker. Reds' TV analyst Barry Larkin said, "The boys are competitive."
Indeed they are. The Reds have now won two straight and are tied for first place in the NL Central division heading into play on Thursday afternoon. The Reds will send Chase Burns to the mound looking for a three-game sweep of the Giants. San Francisco will counter with Landen. Roupp, and if Steer is in the lineup, it'll be interesting to see if there's a carryover into Thursday's contest.
