Update (7/28/2025 at 9:40 p.m. ET): Eugenio Suárez told reporters in Detroit that X-rays were negative.

The Cincinnati Reds have become buyers at the MLB trade deadline, but their dream target may be headed for the injured list. Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman was hit-by-pitch during Monday's game against the Detroit Tigers. Reliever Will Vest came up and in on Suárez with a 96 mph fastball that struck the D-backs infielder on the hand. Suárez exited the game with the training staff, and manager Torrey Lovullo is calling him day-to-day.

The timing couldn't be worse for the D-backs who've been shopping Suárez ahead of Thursday's deadline. The two-time All-Star is one of the hottest names available, but a trip to the IL could end any and all pursuits of Arizona's top slugger.

The Reds are one of many teams looking to trade for Geno at the deadline. Ironically, the Tigers are another club who's said to be in pursuit of Suárez ahead of the July 31 deadline. The Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros, and Seattle Mariners have all been mentioned as well.

Suárez had been having an All-Star season with the Diamondbacks, but Arizona decided to become sellers. D-backs GM Mike Hazen began selling off assets like Josh Naylor just last week, and was hoping to get quite the haul for Suárez.

A bidding war has since ensued for Suárez's services, but those plans could go up in smoke if Suárez suffered a fracture or is slated to miss any time. Some fans might remember that Suárez was struck on the hand during the All-Star Game earlier this month as well.

The hope is, of course, that X-rays come back negative, and that Suárez is available for tomorrow's game in Detroit. If the worst-case scenario happens, however, and Geno lands on the IL, that will likely end the Reds' pursuit of the former fan-favorite.

Cincinnati has other options if Suárez suddenly become unavailable. ESPN's Buster Olney linked Tampa Bay Rays slugger Yandy Díaz to the Reds during the Sunday Night Baseball broadcast. There are also outfield bats like Ramon Laureano and Alex Call who'll be available before Thursday's deadline passes.
