Reds could turn the Phillies' trade deadline desperation into a massive win

At this point in the season, the Cincinnati Reds, who had hopes of returning to the postseason for the second straight year, can only look on with envy at the true competitors in the National League. On the bright side, Cincinnati has a chance to capitalize on the tight playoff push by entering trade talks with the remaining hopefuls. One team in particular seems to be a great fit: the Philadelphia Phillies.

Unlike the Reds, who are attempting to build around a young core for success down the line, the Phillies are facing a closing window for a championship as Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and others continue to age. Now is the time for Philadelphia to make a push to unseat the Dodgers. The Reds have the pieces to help the Phillies get over the hump.

Reds could prey on the Phillies’ desperation for a championship at the trade deadline

First of all, the Phillies need a back-end starter. At present, they’re going with Brian Keller as the fifth man, and while he’s a feel-good story, I’m sure Dave Dombrowski would like to have a proven arm for the stretch run. That sounds a lot like Brady Singer. He’s a dependable arm that can eat innings, saving the Phillies’ weary bullpen. If the Reds package him with a reliever, the return could be significant.

There are likely better relievers on the market for the Phillies to target, but if the Reds deal from the ‘pen, lefties Brock Burke or Caleb Ferguson could be options. Both will be free agents at year’s end. Burke has been an exceptional setup man and is in the midst of the best stretch of his career. Ferguson is reliable and has considerable postseason experience with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros, and Seattle Mariners.

The other possible match here is a bit more complicated. Until Spencer Steer sprained his wrist, he was a sure-fire trade candidate, but the injury will keep him with Cincinnati through the end of 2026 at the very least.

The Phillies still need a right-handed bat, preferably with the capability to play outfield. It’s hard to see them biting on any of the other Reds options. The next most logical choice would be Noelvi Marte, but his up-and-down career and questionable defense make him a risky pickup for Philadelphia.

So whether the Phillies raid the Reds' cupboard, or just target one specific player, the Philadelphia and Cincinnati look to be logical trade partners at this year's deadline.
