Skyline Chili is a staple in the city of Cincinnati. While the outsiders might not understand what all the fuss is about, those who were born and raised in southwest Ohio know that a four-way (or five-way) is the only way.
But apparently a contingent of New Yorkers thought that they could recreate the iconic flavor of Cincinnati in egg roll-form at a concession stand inside Citi Field. Based on the reaction of longtime Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Jim Day, the folks in New York should stick to pizza, bagels, and cheesecake.
Reds broadcaster Jim Day didn't care for the Mets' version of Skyline Chili
Day is a man of the people — and a favorite of Reds third baseman Eugenio Suárez. During Wednesday's broadcast of the series finale between the Reds and New York Mets, he stopped by the concession stand and ordered a Skyline Chili egg roll.
According to the description, the egg roll was stuffed with chili, spaghetti, and cheddar cheese and then dropped into the deep frier. Whether or not this was authentic Skyline Chili or not, only Day knows. And based on his reaction, he didn't find the concession snack appealing.
"Well since you guys have absolutely no guts whatsoever," Day said to his broadcast partners John Sadak and Jeff Brantley. "And since I'm a team player, I'm going to try it out. Now I can't imagine this is true Skyline. First of all it's very greasy."
Day proceeded to take a bite of what can best be described as a deep-fried chili cheese dog with spaghetti. His first reaction to the culinary catastrophe was met with a one-word response. "Um," Day muttered into the microphone.
"That's not the most ringing endorsement," Sadak interjected. "When it opens with a long, um."
The camera then panned to the duo of Sadak and Brantley laughing in the broadcast booth at Citi Field while Day tried to gather himself.
"I love Skyline," Day confessed. "Can I just say that for the record? I love Skyline. I'm going to give it one more try. I kind of got the edge of it. So we'll get deep into it."
Day proceeded to take another bite while Sadak and Brantley continued to laugh while critiquing the manner in which he ate the egg roll. Day followed up his second bite by saying, "This is the lowest point of my career, and I've had some low ones." He closed the segment by calling the egg roll "below-mid" and later suggested he'd be sitting at the back of the plane on the way back to Cincinnati.
Sadak wrapped up the discourse rather succinctly saying, "So his review was, um, um, I'd like to apologize to mom, I'm going to give this one more try, and oof. And then he called it the lowest point of his career."
It's probably safe to say that no one on the Reds broadcast team will trying any of the food at Citi Field during their next trip to Flushing. And while the food review and series finale didn't go the Reds' way, at least Cincinnati was able to escape New York with a 2-1 series win over the Mets.
