Red Sox late-scratch could have Reds fans on edge as Hunter Greene trade rumors swirl

With the MLB trade deadline just over 24 hours away, the Hunter Greene trade rumors have grown louder and louder. The Boston Red Sox are said to be one of the biggest suitors for Greene, but the Cincinnati Reds reportedly rebuffed the initial offer.

An interesting development, however, could bring rise to the idea that those talks are gaining momentum. The Red Sox top prospect, Franklin Arias, is not in the starting lineup today for Boston's Triple-A affiliate, which could be a clue as to their intentions.

The Reds are known to be seeking Major League-ready players at this year's deadline, and Arias certainly qualifies. The 20-year-old shortstop began the year at Double-A, but was recently promoted to the Red Sox's Triple-A affiliate in Worcester. Combined, he's hitting .310/.398/.578 with 21 home runs, 59 RBI, and five stolen bases.

Arias alone wouldn't cut the mustard. The Red Sox would also have to include some other top talent. Prospects like Kyson Witherspoon — a player the Reds were known to have liked in 2025 MLB Draft — and maybe even rookie hurler Payton Tolle might be enough to start the conversation.

Arias' absence could be due to an injury, a regularly scheduled off day, or another pending deal the Red Sox are working on. But given his status as one of the top-10 prospects in baseball, any trade Boston may have in the works is going to be considered a blockbuster.

Greene has become a polarizing player throughout Reds Country. Some fans see his other-worldly talent and team-friendly contract as chief reasons Cincinnati shouldn't even think about trading him. Still others look at the laundry list of injuries he's endured during his time with the Reds as a reason to part company before he loses any more trade value.

Greene missed the first half of the 2026 season while recovering from elbow surgery. He's made just five starts this season and has a 6.83 ERA and 1.373 WHIP to go along with 33 strikeouts in just under 28 innings pitched. But those numbers are hardly a true reflection of Greene's immense talent. He has an impressive 3.82 ERA for his career, and has posted an ERA below 3.00 the past two seasons.

After his last start, Greene was asked about the prospect of being traded at the deadline. He dismissed the idea as something that's out of his control, and is instead focused on helping his team win. It'll be interesting to see if Greene's next start is for the Reds or another contender. Maybe even the Red Sox.
