Will Benson got the message loud and clear. The Cincinnati Reds outfielder was optioned to Triple-A Louisville at the outset of the 2025 season, and Benson has done nothing but produce since the minor-league season began.

Benson has been hitting for power and for average with a .341/.357/.585 slash line, two home runs, and eight RBI. Based on Benson's red-hot start and the pathetic performance put forth from Jake Fraley, it's high-time the Reds make a one-for-one swap in order to bolster the team's offensive production.

But that's not the only roster move Cincinnati needs to make before the team's three-game series against the San Francisco Giants. With second baseman Matt McLain nursing a sore hamstring, the Reds need to add another versatile bat to the lineup. Calling up infield prospect Tyler Callihan should also be on the Reds agenda.

McLain has been sidelined the past three games. Though he made a pinch-hit appearance on Friday, he's been out of the Reds starting lineup the past two days. With both McLain and Spencer Steer limited, the Reds bench has narrowed significantly.

These restrictions have hamstrung Reds manager Terry Francona, and it's time to get another infielder onto the active roster. While Noelvi Marte would be a fine choice, bringing along Callihan gives the Reds far more flexibility.

Marte has put up solid numbers at the beginning of the minor-league season, but Callihan's ability to play multiple positions would give Francona more options. Callihan has played in left field and second base for the Louisville Bats this season, but also has experience at first and third base as well. He's hitting .324 on the season with a .984 OPS in 34 at-bats.

Adding Benson and Callihan to the active roster would allow Gavin Lux and Santiago Espinal to share second base duties in the event that McLain is still hobbled. Callihan could also take over at the keystone if Francona prefers to have Lux remain in left field.

The Reds need to do something in order to jumpstart the offense, and replacing Fraley with Benson is a good place to start. But Benson should have a buddy on his flight to San Francisco, and Callihan would be a solid choice.
