Who did the Reds select in Round 1 of the 2022 MLB Draft?
The 2022 MLB Draft featured a ton of highly touted prospects that have the potential to be superstars in a few years. The top two picks were prospects with major league blood in their veins, as both Andrew Jones Jr. and Jackson Holliday had fathers who played in the bigs.
Adding to the list of 2022 MLB Draft picks who have family ties to Major League Baseball would be the Cincinnati Reds top pick in the draft, Cam Collier, son of eight-year major league veteran, Lou Collier.
This pick brought a ton of excitement to Cincinnati, as he was not expected to be avialable at the 18th overall pick in the draft. Some mock drafts predicted Collier would go as high as No. 4 overall. These lofty projections were not unfounded.
Who did the Reds select in Round 1 of the 2022 MLB Draft?
The first thing that jumps off the board about cam Collier is his age. When the MLB Draft took place last July, Collier was just 17 years old. Collier now has over 30 games of professional baseball under his belt and is barely 18 years old.
Collier has a sweet, left-handed swing that contains a tremendous amount of bat speed and power. To go along with that, his frame is that of one that MLB scouts dream on. Collier is already built like a veteran big leaguer, and his arm strength is there to back that claim up.
A common knock on a young prospects is their lack of discipline and maturity. That doesn't seem to be much of a problem for Collier, as he has drawn 11 walks in 81 at-bats. His continued growth as a hitter is key to his climb through the Cincinnati Reds farm system.
Collier ranks as the Reds fourth-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline. That puts him ahead of the likes of Matt McLain and Christian Encarnacion-Strand. This just goes to show how high the ceiling is for Collier.
Collier is currently considered a third baseman and he has the tools to stick there. His glove and arm project well at the hot corner, and has more than enough athletic ability to handle the position.
Cam Collier has an incredibly high ceiling. Reds fans should familiarize themselves with this name, as he will be in Cincinnati making a difference before we know it.
