Strange as it may seem, the last time that Great American Ball Park was sold out on Opening Day was back in 2019. On March 28, 2019, David Bell made his managerial debut for the Cincinnati Reds and Derek Dietrich sent the fans home happy.

Of course, in 2020, the coronavirus pandemic postponed Reds Opening Day for several months and there were no fans in the stands that year. The lingering effects of the pandemic caused almost every Major League Baseball team to greatly reduce the stadium capacities across the country in 2021. The Reds opened that season with just 12,264 in attendance.

Then, because of the ongoing lockout last spring, MLB had to scramble in order to get the season started in April. With games delayed by a week, Cincinnati opened the 2022 season on the road for the first time since 1990.
