The 2022 MLB Draft is one week away. What used to take place during the month of June has now shifted to All-Star Week in July. The Cincinnati Reds will be making their first-round selection on Sunday, July 17, 2022.
The festivities begin at 7 PM ET and will be televised nationally on ESPN. The draft should begin shortly after the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals wrap up a three-game set at Busch Stadium in the Gateway City.
Last year, the Reds had the good fortune of seeing Matt McLain fall all the way down to No. 17 in the 2021 MLB Draft. McLain was widely regarded as a Top 10 prospect and might end up being the steal of last year's draft.
What pick do the Reds have in the 1st-round of the 2022 MLB Draft?
The Cincinnati Reds snagged Matt McLain at No. 17 and we'll see if they experience a similar result with the No. 18 pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. After finishing with their first winning record in a 162-game season since 2013, Cincinnati climbed up the draft board.
The Baltimore Orioles hold the No. 1 overall pick in this year' draft with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers rounding out the Top 3. The order of the draft was determined by a team's win-loss record with the worst team in the league receiving the first pick in the draft and then going in reverse order.
That will not be the case in the 2023 MLB Draft. Part of the new collective bargaining agreement will see the Top 6 picks decided by lottery with all non-playoff teams eligible to land the No. 1 overall pick. This was done to help dissuade "tanking", but the Cincinnati Reds seem none too concerned about that.
It'll be interesting to see which direction the Reds go in Round 1 of the 2022 MLB Draft. Will they go pitcher or position player? Will it be a prep player or will general manager Nick Krall dip into the collegiate ranks? We should know the results by next Sunday evening.
