Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Lodolo was not scheduled to take the mound for Thursday's series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers, but with the game now postponed, it's possible that Lodolo's 2024 debut could be pushed back as well.

The start time Wednesday's game against the Brew Crew was altered due to the rain and Thursday's forecast, forced the Reds-Brewers series finale to be postponed. Thursday's game was supposed to begin at 1:10 p.m. ET with Nick Martinez taking the ball for the Reds. Instead, the game will be made up as part of split-doubleheader on August 30, 2024.

Lodolo, who hasn't pitched in a major league game since May of 2023, is scheduled to start on Saturday when the Reds go on the road to play the Chicago White Sox. With Thursday's game postponed, it's possible that Lodolo's first start of the season will be pushed back until Sunday.

Reds rain delay: Could Nick Lodolo's 2024 debut be pushed back after series finale vs. Brewers was postponed?

Wednesday's rain delay did not help Hunter Greene one bit. The right-hander took the hill after the game was delayed for nearly two hours. Outside of a first-inning home run off the bat of Christian Yelich, Greene's performance was salvageable. Many of the six runs that Greene allowed were tahnks to well-placed ground balls that just happened to find a hole in the defense.

Greene continued to work in his splitter and curveball; two pitches he's been trying to develop this season. According to Baseball Savant, Greene threw 105 total pitches, 11 of which were either a splitter or curveball.

Martinez was scheduled to take the hill Thursday, and would have been looking for improvement following his previous start against the New York Mets last week. Martinez allowed five runs on eight hits over five innings.

With today's game now postponed until August, expect to see Lodolo make his 2024 debut on Saturday at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago. Martinez will likely be pushed back until Friday, with Andrew Abbott to follow on Saturday, and Lodolo should then get the ball for Sunday's series finale.
