The Cincinnati Reds made a slew of transactions on Tuesday afternoon, none of which included Spencer Steer's selection to the 40-man roster. These move suggest that Steer's promotion to the big leagues will be delayed until 2023.

The Reds placed both Matt Reynolds (left hip pain) and Graham Ashcraft (right biceps soreness). Stuart Fairchild will replace Reynolds and T.J. Zeuch was recalled and is expected to take Ashcraft's spot in the starting rotation.

Cincinnati also optioned Michael Papierski to Triple-A Louisville and will give Chuckie Robinson his first real taste of the big leagues. Robinson was added to the 40-man roster earlier this month after Aramis Garica hit the 60-day IL and was the 27th man in the Field of Dreams Game.

Don't look for Spencer Steer to make his Reds debut in 2022.

The placement of Matt Reynolds on the 10-day IL gave the Cincinnati Reds a golden opportunity to add Spencer Steer to the active. Yes, it would have required a corresponding transaction, but if Michael Papierski is being sent down at this point in the season for Chuckie Robinson, chances are good we won't see the catcher on the Reds offseason roster.

The only legitimate reason the front office can make at this point is that Steer would not receive regular playing time. Despite Joey Votto being out for the season, the Cincinnati infield seems set with Mike Moustakas, Kyle Farmer, Jose Barrero, and Jonathan India. With Reynolds on the IL, expect to see Alejo Lopez grab a handful of starts over the next couple of weeks.

The chance still exists for the Cincinnati Reds to promote Spencer Steer to the major leagues once rosters expand in September. Teams are able to carry 28 players after September 1, but Steer would still need to be added to the 40-man roster. Time will tell, but it looks as though Steer's major league debut will be delayed until 2023.
