MLB Insider: Reds in active trade talks for Guardians pitcher Shane Bieber
The Cincinnati Reds continue to look for that frontline starter.
Add another name to the list. According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Cincinnati Reds in active trade talks for Cleveland Guardians Shane Bieber.
These latest Reds rumors come on the heels of yesterday's report that Cincinnati was interested in Tyler Glasnow. Morosi also mentions the Tampa Bay Rays starter in his report, and includes the Chicago Cubs as a potential landing destination as well.
Bieber, much like Glasnow, is only under contract through the 2024 season and will be a free agent next winter.
Reds rumors: Cincinnati in active trade talks for Shane Bieber
With all these Reds rumors swirling as the MLB Winter Meetings are on tap for next week, it appears as though president of baseball operations Nick Krall is serious about adding to Cincinnati's starting rotation.
Shane Bieber appeared in 21 games for the Cleveland Guardians last season and posted a 6-6 record with a 3.80 ERA. Bieber is in the final year of his arbitration window. After taking home $10 million in 2023, MLB Trade Rumors estimates that the right-hander can expect to make $12.2 million next season.
That's about half of what Tyler Glasnow's 2023 salary will be. The Tampa Bay Rays right-hander is also a possible trade candiate. Glasnow is owed $25 million next season and will be a free agent after his 2024 campaign.
These latest Reds rumors continue to hit on the narrative that Cincinnati is looking to add a top-of-the-rotation this offseason. The Cincinnati Reds incurred a myriad of injuries to their top starters last season, and were forced to rely on the likes of Brett Kennedy and Michael Mariot.
Shane Bieber is a bit more durable than Tyler Glasnow having thrown over 200 innings twice in his career. However, the former Cy Young Award-winner missed several months last season with an elbow injury. That's definitely something that could raise a red flag.
