Reds must accept Devin Mesoraco's offer after 2024 season has Cincy in familiar spot
Let's run it back.
The Cincinnati Reds are, unfortunately, in familiar territory. Cincinnati is likely to end the season below .500 once again, and the Reds will be sitting at home during the MLB Postseason. What else is new, right?
But unlike the Chicago White Sox — who are losers without a chance at a top-10 pick — the Reds will be part of the MLB Draft lottery once again this offseason. The inaugural event robbed the Reds of a top-5 pick, but Cincinnati fans shouldn't complain because it enabled the team to draft Rhett Lowder with the seventh-overall selection in the 2023 MLB Draft.
But last year, Cincinnati was a major benefactor of the MLB Draft lottery. The Reds had less than a 1% chance to secure the No. 1 overall, and by win-loss record, would've been selecting 14th. But the lottery swung Cincinnati's way and the Reds moved all the way up to No. 2 in the 2024 MLB Draft where they would select Chase Burns this past July.
The Reds need Devin Mesoraco to represent them once again at the MLB Draft lottery
The Reds are going to need a lot of luck if they want to leapfrog a number of other competitors two years in a row. Last year, Devin Mesoraco was the Reds' representative for the MLB Draft lottery and playfully predicted —through a social media post — that his presence would help the team secure a top-3 pick.
Mesoraco appears ready to volunteer for the task once again. Mesoraco, responding to a post on X (former Twitter) from MLB Draft guru Joe Doyle, inserted a meme saying, "I've done it before and I can do it again." Yes, please.
This is a no-brainer. The Reds should already be on the phone with Mesoraco and booking him a flight to Dallas, Texas for this year's MLB Winter Meetings in December. The former first-round pick spent almost his entire career in Cincinnati, but Mesoraco's tenure was unfortunately defined by constant injuries.
The Reds eventually traded Mesoraco to the New York Mets in 2018, ending his time in the Queen City with a a career .715 OPS and one All-Star appearance. But if Mesoraco is selected as Cincinnati's representative for the 2025 MLB Draft lottery and lands the club a top-3 pick once again, he may have earned a spot in the Reds Hall of Fame.
