The Cincinnati Reds have given plenty of young pitchers an opportunity to make an impression this season. Though injuries have been the primary reason that so many pitching prospects have made their Major League debut, the circumstances at least give the Reds' front office a glimpse of what to expect from so of their highly-touted young talent.

On Wednesday, it was announced that another young pitcher was moving on up. While Chase Petty won't be making the leap to the big leagues, the former first-round pick has been promoted to Triple-A Louisville.

Petty has spent the entire 2024 season at Double-A Chattanooga. Formerly a farmhand in the Minnesota Twins organization, Petty was traded to the Reds in 2022 in exchange for All-Star pitcher Sonny Gray. Petty has a tremendous pedigree and is seen as a top-10 prospect in the Reds farm system according to MLB Pipeline.

Chase Petty's promotion adds further intrigue to 2025 Reds' rotation projection

Petty will likely be given a handful of starts at the end of the season, but this is a tremendous opportunity for the young right-hander to put his name in the hat to be part of the 2025 Opening Day rotation. More than likely, Petty will return to Triple-A to begin the 2025 season, but stranger things have happened.

It's doubtful that the Reds' brass thought Rhett Lowder would be in the big leagues this season. But injuries to Andrew Abbott, Hunter Greene, Graham Ashcraft, and Nick Lodolo forced their hand. Julian Aguiar was also thrown into the fire after just nine starts in Triple-A. While Petty is unlikely to break camp with the Reds next spring, he's definitely in line to make his Major League debut in 2025.

Reds fans also can't forget Carson Spiers, Lyon Richardson, and Brandon Williamson. Both Spiers and Richardson are more likely ticketed for a relief role moving forward, but Williamson is definitely starting material. There's also the likes of Connor Phillips, Christian Roa, and perhaps even Jakob Junis.

Outside of Greene, Abbott, and Lodolo, no one on the Reds 40-man roster is guaranteed to have a spot in the 2025 starting rotation. Petty's promotion to Triple-A adds one more name to the growing list of potential pitchers who'll look to join next year's starting rotation on Opening Day.
