Chuckie Robinson has yet to distinguish himself from the other Reds catchers
Chuckie Robinson was called up to the big leagues to be the 27th man during the Field of Dreams Game last month. Robinson never entered the game itself and later debuted for the Cincinnati Reds after being recalled on August 23rd.
Robinson has been a feel-good story in a season that most Reds fans would just as soon forget. It's not every day that a former 21st-round draft pick makes it to the major leagues.
But Robinson has done very little to distinguish himself from the other catchers on Cincinnati's roster. Along with Austin Romine, Robinson has split catching duties for the past several weeks, but it remains to be seen if the 27-year-old has done enough to warrant a spot on the Reds offseason roster.
Chuckie Robinson has yet to distinguish himself from the other Reds catchers.
After Tyler Stephenson was declared out for the remainder of the 2022 season, the Cincinnati Reds appear to have had an audition of sorts for the team's backup catcher heading into the 2023 season.
Fans have seen Aramis Garcia, Austin Romine, Michael Papierski, Mark Kolozsvary, and Chuckie Robinson all try their hand at solidifying a spot on the Reds offseason roster. Garcia is on the 60-day IL, Romine will be a free agent at season's end, and Papierski and Kolozsvary are both at Triple-A Louisville.
That leaves Robinson as the lone backstop at the moment with the most to gain. He's yet to really do that. In 16 games, Robinson is hitting .103/.103/.205 with two extra-base hits and a 32.5% strikeout-rate. Robinson has yet to draw a walk in his 40 plate appearances and, according to FanGraphs, has a wRC+ of -30.
Chuckie Robinson is an easy player to root for. He made it to the big leagues the hard way as he toiled in the minor leagues for six-plus years before finally making it to the majors. But Robinson has failed to grab that brass ring, and unless something drastically changes in the next few weeks, Robinson will likely be non-tendered during the winter.
