The Cincinnati Reds had a huge number of first-year players on last year's roster. As the team traded away longtime favorites like Eugenio Suarez and Jesse Winker, several rookies made their major league debut.

Jose Barrero was a rookie in 2021, but failed to live up to the lofty expectations heaped upon him during his second major league season. Barrero's future with the team is now in question as he approaches his third year in the big leagues.

The sophomore slump can be a real thing, as we saw with both Jonathan India and Tyler Stephenson last season. Which three Cincinnati Reds rookies will take on a surprisingly lesser role in 2023?

1. Reds rookie Fernando Cruz will have a surprisingly decreased role in 2023.

It's a little hard to say that Fernando Cruz will have a decreased role heading into 2023 as the longtime minor league pitcher only made it to the big leagues last September after spending the entire year at Triple-A Louisville.

Cruz was actually drafted by the Kansas City Royals back in 2007 as a position. His unconventional route to major leagues included stops in independent baseball leagues and the Mexican League as well. All of his hard work paid off with his debut coming late last season.

But Cruz, who was the Louisville Bats closer in 2022, will have far more competition among the Reds relief corps to begin the 2023 season season than he did after arriving for the home stretch last season.

The Cincinnati Reds will be having Tony Santillan, Lucas Sims, and Tejay Antone return from injury in 2023 and all three are likely to be part of the backend of the bullpen. That said, Art Warren and Jeff Hoffman will not be part of Cincinnati's roster in 2023, so while Cruz's role will likely be as a midle reliever, he should still expect to be part of next year's team.

2. Reds rookie Alejo Lopez will have a surprisingly decreased role in 2023.

Sad as it may be to several Cincinnati Reds fans, it's hard to see Alejo Lopez having a larger role in 2023. But, it's difficult to see the 26-year-old having a similar role as well. Lopez played in 61 games last season while fielding second and third base as well as seeing time in the outfield.

The hard truth is that Lopez's style of play doesn't seem to fit with the direction baseball is headed. Lopez is a terrific contact hitter, and perhaps with the elimination of the defensive shift, could be an asset for the Redlegs in 2023.

But Cincinnati has an influx of talented infielders coming up through the farm system, and it's very easy to see Lopez getting squeezed out by the likes of Elly De La Cruz, Noelvi Marte, and Spencer Steer.

There's also veterans like Matt Reynolds and Mike Moustakas who are still on the roster, not to mention the presence of Nick Senzel who may be taking on the role of super-utility player in 2023.

The deck appears to be stacked against Alejo Lopez, but that's nothing new for the former 27th-round pick. Lopez was tendered a contract for the 2023 season, so there's that. Lopez will have to continue to fight and claw for his role next season, something he's done throughout his professional career.

3. Reds rookie Connor Overton will have a surprisingly decreased role in 2023.

Connor Overton will have an uphill battle to land a spot in the Cincinnati Reds starting rotation next season. After spending the majority of his professional career in the minor leagues, Overton slid into the rotation last season after a bevy of injuries forced the Reds to look deep into their minor leauge system.

Overton came in and was utterly dominant. In his first four starts, Overton logged 24.2 innings and posted a 1.82 ERA. It wasn't always pretty, but Overton got the job done. The right-hander struck out just 10 batters while walking seven.

Overton isn't going to blow you away with his velocity or strikeout-rate, but the 29-year-old knows how to record outs. However, heading into next season, Overton will have his work cut out for him if he hopes to maintain a spot in the starting rotation.

It would appear as though three of the five spots have already been claimed by a trio of rookies from last season. Hunter Greene, Graham Ashcraft, and Nick Lodolo all but solidified their spot in the 2023 rotation.

There's also Justin Dunn and Luis Cessa along with up-and-comers like Levi Stoudt and Brandon Williamson. And that doesn't even take into account the fact that Cincinnati might pursue a few veteran starters in free agency as well.

Connor Overton will have a spot on the Cincinnati Reds roster, but one could easily see him coming out of the bullpen or beginning the year at Triple-A. Overton could make a name for himself on next year's team, but the back injury that forced him to miss more than half of last season could impact his standing heading into 2023.
