When somebody says, "It's not you, it's me," that usually means it's you. When it comes to the severed relationship between the Cincinnati Reds and former first-round pick Nick Senzel, it was definitely him.

Senzel signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the rebuilding Washington Nationals this past offseason after he was dumped by the Reds following the 2023 season. Senzel signed on to play third base, a position he rarely played during his time in Cincinnati.

But Senzel was designated for assignment earlier this month and became a free agent once again. You know things are bad when the Nats let you go. But Senzel has a new home, and it's a team who, just like Washington, has no intention of winning.

Former Reds OF Nick Senzel signs with the White Sox

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Senzel signed a contract with the Chicago White Sox. Most baseball fans know that Chicago has the worst record in the major leagues with a mark of 27-71.

The South Siders have been abysmal this season, and will likely only get worse with the MLB trade deadline approaching. The White Sox are expected to jettison their top talent before July 30th with players like Luis Robert and Garrett Crochet potentially finding new homes in the next couple of weeks.

But the White Sox have received little to nothing from third base this season. Chicago's third baseman have a combined .561 OPS — the lowest in the major leagues. Senzel is having a tame year in his own right with a .209/.303/.359 slash line and 91 OPS+. Senzel has seven big flies and 18 RBIs as well.

The Reds made the decision this past offseason to finally cut ties with the former Tennessee Volunteer. Year after year, Reds fans were hopeful to watch Senzel live up that first-round hype, but it never materialized, and after a rather contentious season in 2023, Senzel was non-tendered.

The Reds' lack of faith in Senzel has been justified after the Nats said goodbye and the White Sox rolled out the welcome mat. Senzel's future in the majors is very much tied to his second-half performance in Chicago. Senzel's career-79 OPS+ and -2.2 bWAR doesn't paint a pretty picture for his MLB future beyond this season.
