12 former Reds that are playing in the 2024 MLB Playoffs

This is a long list of ex-players.

Unfortunately, the Cincinnati Reds are not in the MLB Playoffs this season. The Reds fell woefully short of expectations during the 2024 season, and because of it, David Bell lost his job.

The Reds have since hired Terry Francona to replace Bell, and the Cincinnati faithful are already excited about next season. Perhaps the presence of a seasoned manager like Francona will be enough to get the Reds back to the postseason.

But while this year's Reds team did not make it to the playoffs, a number of former players will be vying for a trip to the World Series. Some names are familiar, while others aren't. Every team remaining in the postseason, with the exception of the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers, has an ex-Reds player on the roster. Who are they?

Honorable Mention — These former Reds played during the Wild Card Series

  • Frankie Montas, Reds pitcher (2024)
  • Kevin Herget, Reds pitcher (2023)
  • Austin Slater, Reds outfielder (2024)
  • Matt Bowman, Reds pitcher (2019)
  • Livan Soto, Reds infielder (2024)
  • Raisel Iglesias, Reds pitcher (2015-20)
  • Adam Duvall, Reds outfielder (2015-18)
  • Cionel Perez, Reds pitcher (2021)

Which ex-Reds players will participate in the 2024 NLDS?

Donovan Solano, Reds infielder (2022)

How could you ever forget a player with a nickname like Donnie Barrels? Donovan Solano was one of the Reds' best hitters during the team's rebuild in 2022. Solano was signed to a one-year deal, and after an injury during spring training sidelined the versatile infielder became a key player for the Reds during the second-half of the season. Solano will be in the San Diego Padres starting lineup this weekend against the Dodgers.

Wandy Peralta, Reds pitcher (2016-19)

Wandy Peralta is also part of the Padres' playoff roster. After three-plus seasons in Cincinnati, Peralta was traded to the San Francisco Giants, and eventually found a home with the New York Yankees. Peralta was on the IL this season, but still pitched in 46 games for the Friars.

Jesse Winker, Reds outfielder (2017-21)

Jesse Winker has been at the center of some controversy. The former Reds All-Star exchanged some words with Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames during the NL Wild Card Series, and recently spiked his helmet on home plate after scoring one of the New York Mets four runs during Game 3 against the Brewers. It's doubtful Winker will be welcomed back in Milwaukee any time soon.

Jose Iglesias, Reds infielder (2019)

The slick-fielding Jose Iglesias is playing alongside Winker with the Mets this postseason. After missing the 2023 season, Iglesias is having one of the best seasons of his career with an .830 OPS in 85 games for New York this season.

Harrison Bader, Reds outfielder (2023)

Harrison Bader's tenure with the Reds is one that fans would just as soon forget. Bader came over from the Yankees last September, and while always known for his elite-level defense, the outfielder's bat left a lot to the imagination. Bader ended the 2023 season on the IL and signed a $10.5 million deal with the Mets this offseason.

Nick Castellanos, Reds outfielder (2020-21)

The one that got away, right? If there's one player in recent memory that captured the hearts of the Cincinnati faithful, it was Nick Castellanos. The slugger went to his first All-Star Game while playing for the Reds in 2021, but opted out his contract during the offseason and inked a five-year, $100 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jeff Hoffman, Reds pitcher (2021-22)

It's hard to envision Jeff Hoffman as an All-Star caliber pitcher, but that's exactly what he's done since landing in Philly. The right-hander has been a key piece of the Phillies bullpen and even went to the Midsummer Classic this season.

Which ex-Reds players will participate in the 2024 ALDS?

Luke Weaver, Reds pitcher (2023)

Reds fans do not have good memories of Luke Weaver. The right-hander was somewhat of a stopgap starter in 2023 before being released after posting a 6.87 ERA 21 starts. But what a difference a year makes, right? Weaver's been a reliever for the New York Yankees this season and owns a sparkling 2.89 ERA heading into the postseason.

Michael Lorenzen, Reds pitcher (2015-21)

Of all the ex-Reds on this list, Michael Lorenzen is the player who spent the most time in the Queen City. Mikey Biceps is now pitching for the Kansas City Royals after being traded from the Texas Rangers midseason. Lorenzen has been lights out for KC with a 1.57 ERA in seven appearances.

Hunter Renfroe, Reds outfielder (2023)

As was the case with the aforementioned Bader, Hunter Renfroe was a late-season addition in 2023. Renfroe did not play well in his 14 games with the Reds and was quickly dismissed after recording just five hits in 44 plate appearances.

Tommy Pham, Reds outfielder (2022)

The most memorable thing Tommy Pham did in a Reds uniform was slap Joc Pederson. Pham and Pederson squabbled over fantasy football, which eventually resulted in a phyiscal altercation prior to a game between the Reds and Giants. Pham was traded midway through the season.

Ben Lively, Reds pitcher (2023)

While it may be hard for Reds fans to root for the Cleveland Guardians, it's easy to root for Ben Lively. Formerly of the KBO, Lively was a bulldog for the Reds last season and was uncermounously dumped during the offseason. Lively was picked up by Cleveland and has a 3.81 ERA in 29 starts this season.
