Oft-criticized Reds outfielder will become essential if Cincy fails to upgrade roster

Don't sleep on those currently on the Reds roster.

Without a doubt, nearly every single member of Reds Country wants to see the organization sign or trade for an outfielder — preferably a right-handed hitter. Frankly, it's been an issue since Nick Castellanos left for greener pastures following the 2021 season.

To date, the Cincinnati Reds have been exceedingly quiet in free agency. Yes, president of baseball operations Nick Krall has swung a few trades that have helped make the roster better, but Cincinnati has yet to upgrade the outfield.

Sadly, that may never come this offseason. If the Reds stand pat, that will put a major weight onto the shoulders of the oft-criticized Stuart Faircihld. Strangely enough, keeping Fairchild on the roster as a platoon outfielder is not the worst idea.

I know, I know, nobody likes the idea of platooning players. Believe me, I get it. But, there is merit to the idea, and in a world where the Reds outright refuse to spend excessive amounts of money on a power-bat for the outfield, you may be stuck with Fairchild once again in 2025. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

If you'll remember, Fairchild made some phenomenal defensive plays for the Reds in 2024. The former second-round pick robbed at least two would-be homers last season and was second on the team in outs above average with 4 OAA, trailing only Elly De La Cruz. He also led all Reds players with 6 defensive runs saved (DRS). On a team filled with those who've converted from the infield to the outfield, it's nice to have a player who's suiting up at his natural position.

While an above-average defender, the batters' box has been unkind to Fairchild over the years — at least against right-handed pitching. For his career, Fairchild owns a meager .224/.308/.389 slash line. Against right-handed pitching, Fairchild's numbers take a nosedive (.203/.274/.371).

Stuart Fairchild's success vs. LHP might help him make the Reds Opening Day roster

However, against lefties, Fairchild has enjoyed some success. The 27-year-old has hit .248/.346/.409 against southpaws during his career. Fairchild was even better against left-handers last season, hitting .273/.350/.436. Are we sure that a combination of Fairchild and Jake Fraley in right field is a big mistake heading into 2025?

Reds fans are hopeful to see the team sign a big-bat that can play right field. But that's easier said than done, and the Reds do not have a good track record when it comes to making those type of blockbuster signings.

At the moment, the Reds' outfield might be comprised of Fairchild, Fraley, TJ Frield, and Spencer Steer. While there are no All-Stars in that group, all four are capable contributors if put the right position. If Cincinnati refuses to add an extra outfielder, it's a virutal lock that Fairchild will be part of the Reds Opening Day roster.
