The Philadelphia Phillies were unsuccessful in their search for trade partner this offseason, and with spring training underway, they made the decision to release Nick Castellanos. Surprisingly, New York Post columnist Jon Heyman listed the Cincinnati Reds as a potential fit for Castellanos.
A reunion with Castellanos would've made sense about two weeks ago — the Reds were desperate for some extra pop in their lineup. But after signing Eugenio Suárez to be the team's primary desiganted hitter in 2026, Cincinnati no longer seems like a logical destination for Castellanos.
A Reds reunion with Nick Castellanos seems unlikely
Castellanos signed a four-year, $64 million deal with the Reds in 2020. He endured a difficult stretch during the pandemic-shortened season, hitting just .225/.298/.486 with 14 home runs and 34 RBI in 60 games. His performance in 2021, however, garnered him a trip to the All-Star Game and even MVP votes. Castellanos hit .309/.362/.576 that season, clobbered 34 home runs, and led the team with 100 RBI.
Castellanos opted out of his contract the following offseason and signed a five-year, $100 million deal with the Phillies. The slugger put together another All-Star campaign in 2023, but his time in the City of Brotherly Love came with mixed resulted.
The relationship between Castellanos and Phillies manager Rob Thomson soured this past season. Castellanos, who prides himself on being available for all 162 games, saw a reduction in playing time in 2025. He appeared in 147 games, but it wasn't uncommon for him to be replaced at various times for a defensive upgrade in right field.
With Castellanos' time in Philly having come to a close, one has to wonder where he'll land next. The Phillies are on the hook for the remainder of Castellanos' $20 million salary, so he could easily sign with a team for the veteran minimum. A reunion in Cincinnati is certainly possible, but unlikely.
Heyman also named the San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays, and Texas Rangers as potential fits for the two-time All-Star. Castellanos could lay low for a couple weeks. Injuries are not uncommon during spring training, and that could open up an opportunity for Castellanos to prove himself once again.
