MLB insider squashes the idea of potential Reds' reunion with longtime fan favorite
Is Geno a no-no?
The Cincinnati Reds could be on the lookout for a third baseman this offseason. The Reds received little production from the duo of Noelvi Marte and Jeimer Candelario last season, and many fans assume that Cincinnati will attempt to upgrade the position this winter.
One name that's sure to get Reds fans excited is former All-Star Eugenio Suárez. The longtime Reds' third baseman was traded to the Seattle Mariners in 2022 and spent last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Geno could become a free agent this offseason, but there's a catch.
Suárez's contract, which he actually signed while part of the Reds organization, contains a team-option for the 2025 season. Though some observers don't see Arizona exercising the option, one MLB insider believes the D-backs will do just that.

Jim Bowden, someone who Reds' fans know quite well, recently published an article at The Athletic (subscription required) listing the top-45 free agents set to hit the open market. Suárez came in at No. 25 after smacking 30 homers and racking up 100 RBI with Arizona this past season. Bowden believes that Suárez's performance will prompt the Diamondbacks to pick up $15-million team-option for 2025. Geno's contract contains a $2 million buyout if the D-backs choose to let him enter free agency.
If Suárez's contract is picked up, the D-backs could always look to trade the former Reds' third baseman. But then, Cincinnati would be on the hook for Geno's salary and whatever trade capital Arizona deems appropriate for Suárez's services.
If indeed the Diamondbacks re-up with Suárez for next season, there aren't too many players on the free agent market who'd be an upgrade over Marte or Candelario. Alex Bregman will definitely be out of Cincinnati's price range, and after that, the drop off is rather severe.
Reds fans who are dreaming of a reunion with Suárez may have to put those aspirations on hold for the time being. The Reds may also tinker with the idea of moving Jonathan India, Matt McLain, and Spencer Steer to the hot corner as well. One thing's for sure, the Reds cannot expect to win if they don't get better production from third base in 2025.
