The Cincinnati Reds need to add some pop to their lineup, and Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. could be the perfect player to do just that. While Robert's current .619 OPS doesn't exactly scream All-Star, his track record — when healthy — does. Robert has a career .262/.314/.464 slash line and won the Silver Slugger Award in 2023.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today is reporting that the trade buzz around Robert is heating up, but one team may have already beaten the Reds to the punch. According to Nightengale, the New York Mets are looking to acquire the White Sox's outfielder, and even cited pitching prospect Blade Tidwell as part of a potential trade package.
Tidwell is currently the Mets' 15th-ranked according to MLB Pipeline. If Tidwell is truly the centerpiece of a White Sox-Mets trade for Robert, Reds' President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall needs to pick up the phone and give Chicago's GM Chris Getz a call.
The Mets are looking to acquire White Sox OF Luis Robert Jr. — a move Reds fans have been begging for
Reds fans have been clamoring to see Cincinnati trade for Robert since the 2024 season came to a close. The White Sox — who'll visit Great American Ball Park this week — have been rebuilding since last season and Robert is arguably the team's biggest trade asset. An injury-plagued season a year ago lowered Robert's trade value, and Getz can't be happy with his slow start at the outset of the 2025 season.
If the price is right, the Reds should make a run at Robert. The former All-Star has two team-options remaining on his current deal after this season, both of which come with a $20 million price tag. Provided Cincinnati doesn't have to part with any of their top prospects, nabbing Robert could be the perfect upside play.
If the White Sox are enamored by Tidwell, perhaps Krall could temp Chicago's front office with a trade package centered around one of the Reds' top pitching prospect — maybe Luke Holman or Adam Serwinowski? The Reds also have several talented shortstop prospects in the farm system as well.
Given how good Cincinnati's pitching has been this season, the Reds cannot afford to be passive. Though the MLB trade deadline is still over two months away, the White Sox seem to entertaining deals for Robert now. If the Mets, or another club, land Robert for a fraction of his perceived trade value, Reds fans will not be happy.
