Mark Wahlberg had the perfect message for Reds fans at Pete Rose movie unveiling

One of Hollywood's leading men revealed that one of the Cincinnati Reds' greatest icons will soon become immortalized on the big screen. Mark Wahlberg is set to play the role of Pete Rose in a new biopic that's scheduled to enter production early next year.

According to Wahlberg, the film will be centered around the latter part of Rose's career when he was a player-manager with the Reds and chasing down Ty Cobb's all-time hits record — a mark he eclipsed on September 11, 1985.

During the reveal, someone in the audience was overheard saying, "Put him in the Hall of Fame." Wahlberg's response didn't disappoint, and it's sure to boost sales among Reds fans who'll no doubt flock to the theater when the movie premieres.

"We gotta put him in the Hall of Fame, yes!" Wahlberg said in response.

Rose passed away in 2024 having been banned from baseball and was thereby ineligible to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Hit King was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame 10 years ago, but that's the only real post-playing career recognition Rose ever received after leaving the dugout in 1989.

But, in 2025, Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson were posthumously reinstated, making both players eligible for the Hall of Fame. The earliest Rose can appear on the ballot, however, is December of 2027 when the Classic Baseball Era Committee (formerly the Veteran's Committee) convenes to discuss who'll be inducted into the 2028 Hall of Fame class. Rose would need 12 of the 16 votes in order to be memorialized in Cooperstown.

Opinions are mixed as to whether or not Rose should be included in the Hall of Fame — though most Reds fans feel the same as Wahlberg. No one will ever argue against Rose's on-field accomplishments, but his off-the-field behavior has tainted his overall legacy.

Wahlberg's comments undoubtedly struck a chord with a majority of Reds fans, and the Cincinnati faithful may now be able to enjoy both a feature-length film and Rose's election to the Hall of Fame sometime next year.
