Bryan Shaw flamed out quickly with the Cincinnati Reds. A long-time Terry Francona disciple, Shaw signed a minor-league deal with Cincinnati this past offseason. But his time in the Reds organization didn't last long, and the veteran reliever is now staring down what could be his last chance to return to the major leagues after agreeing to a minor-league pact with the Seattle Mariners.

Shaw was in Goodyear this spring, vying for a spot in the Reds bullpen, but ultimately came up well short. In nine relief appearances for the Reds, Shaw posted an ugly 11.25 ERA, 9.11 FIP, and walked 10 batters while only striking out eight. He was sent to minor-league camp midway through spring training and later accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Louisville to begin the season.

Shaw's time in the Reds organization, however, came to a screeching halt a couple weeks ago. After beginning the year on the IL, Shaw appeared in four games for the Louisville Bats and had zero command of his pitches. In those four outings, Shaw issued four walks over just 1⅔ innings while allowing eight runs on six hit and struck out just one batter. He'll now have to wait and see if the Mariners will offer him one last shot at glory.

Shaw is no stranger to the Mariners organization. Though the right-hander spent most of career with Francona in Cleveland, Shaw appeared in six games for Seattle during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season after spending spring training with Colorado Rockies. He had an unsightly 18.00 ERA and 7.62 FIP with Seattle that season.

Shaw, 37, is squeezing every last ounce out of career that's spanned nearly 15 years. The grizzled veteran has pitched for five different organizations over that time and appeared in almost 800 games while logging just over 764 innings. Having led the league in relief appearances on four separate occasions, Shaw is the very definition of a workhorse.

The aging journeyman, no doubt, plans to give it all he's got with the Mariners, as this may well be his final chance to pitch in the big leagues. His first outing with his new organization, however, did not go well. Shaw lasted just ⅓ of an inning with Triple-A Tacoma, allowing one run and four walks (one intentional) without recording a punch out. It remains to be seen how many innings Shaw has left, if any.
