Latest Nick Krall rumors could be a trial balloon for Reds fans' outrage

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Nick Krall is expected to retain his position as the Cincinnati Reds president of baseball operations. Obviously, that news was met with exceedingly harsh criticism from a Reds fanbase that is utterly exasperated at the team's shortcomings under Krall's leadership, and were expecting some type of change in the front office this winter.

Interestingly enough, however, we've yet to hear these rumors confirmed by the Reds' ownership group. Other than Krall's own assertion that he'll return, there's been no concrete evidence that he'll be back in 2027.

Remember, this whole discourse began last Sunday when Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer (subscription required) asked Krall if he felt good about his status with ownership. Krall responded by saying, "Yeah, I do. We’ve had some conversations."

MLB insider Buster Olney echoed those sentiments this week. In his most recent column for ESPN, Olney wrote, league sources say that Krall is on solid ground, and manager Terry Francona will go into his third year with the Reds next season.

There's still a little more than a week left in the 2026 season, and given the response from the fans maybe there's a chance that the Reds ownership group has seen how poorly this decision been received by the Cincinnati faithful. One can dream, right?

Will the anger of Reds fanbase change the Castellini's minds?

By all accounts, Reds fans should expect Krall back in 2027. Not because he deserves another chance, but simply because Cincinnati's ownership feel as though they have no better options at the moment — even though they do.

The current Collective Bargaining negotations are likely to result in a lockout on December 1. If the Reds terminated Krall's contract at the end of the season, a thorough interview process would take them well into October, if not beyond.

By the time the new president of baseball operations was brought up to speed, he'd be smack-dab in the middle of a vigorous offseason which is likely to resemble the MLB trade deadline on steroids as players look to sign free-agent deals before the lockout is in place.

Alternatively, the Reds could opt to fire Krall and replace him with GM Brad Meador. But like Krall, Meador has been part of the organization for more than a decade, and the big changes that Reds fans are hoping to see would never happen.

Sadly, this is unlikely to be a trial balloon. Instead, Reds fans will be stuck with Krall making decisions for at least one more year. If, however, the fan angst sways the Castellini's to make a change at the top, the Reds fanbase deserves a lot of credit for making their displeasure known.
