The MLB offseason hasn't officially begun, but that won't stop the media and fans from rampant speculation about upcoming free agent pursuits and blockbuster trade opportunities. One player who's already caught the eye of the Cincinnati Reds fanbase is Josh Naylor.
Because of Naylor's history with Terry Francona, the Reds were linked to the former Cleveland Guardians' first baseman last winter. Unfortunately, nothing ever materialized, and he was eventually traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Naylor was on the move once more — and the Reds were said to be involved in those trade talks as well — when he was shipped to the Pacific Northwest ahead of the July 31 deadline. The D-backs traded Naylor to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for two pitching prospects.
Reds Rumors: Josh Naylor may have offered a clue about his future destination
The Mariners are expected to pursue a reunion with Naylor this offseason, but that may be a tall task for Seattle. Naylor will likely be one of the most sought-after free agent bats available, and many teams (including the Reds) are sure to be in the mix.
Mariners fans became nervous earlier this week when many observed Naylor's response to a post from Cal Raleigh on his Instagram page. Raleigh was expressing thanks to the Mariners fans for their support this past season while also voicing his motivation to get back to the playoffs in 2026.
Naylor responded, "My neck still hurts but it was worth it all. See you around my friend ❤️ Will always be rooting for you, God Speed!"
Now, it must be understood that the last thing Naylor should do in this case is respond with something along the lines of, "Geez whiz, I can't wait to run it back in 2026." Doing so would take away any and all leverage that he and his representation may have during offseason negotiations. That said, there's probably a better way Naylor could've responded that wouldn't have sounded so definitive. His reply has given rise to the notion that he'll be moving on from Seattle this offseason.
If nothing else, Naylor's cryptic message is sure to rile up those Reds fans who want to see him in Cincinnati next season. With Spencer Steer and Sal Stewart on the roster, the positional fit may be questionable, but Naylor's bat could be a difference maker. Keep your eye on upcoming Reds rumors this offseason linking Naylor to Cincinnati.
