One name is synonymous with the Cincinnati Reds in the 21st century: Joey Votto. The former first baseman has remained in close contact with the organization even as he has pursued new opportunities in broadcasting.
Votto has been outspoken about his disinterest in coaching and managing, but recent interviews suggest he may have an eye on executive roles. With Nick Krall in a precarious position heading into 2027, it may be time for the Reds’ legend to throw his hat into the ring.
Votto’s approach to running a club could not be more different from Krall’s. The former NL MVP stressed that the Reds have been spending unwisely on qualifying offers and should focus on the “easy wins.”
He also has been a proponent of AI systems and data analytics. Krall seemingly has no unified philosophy, as evidenced by his decision to sign Eugenio Suárez despite the team’s focus on contact hitting. A new GM with a clear plan would be a massive change for the club.
The Reds should seriously consider Joey Votto as a GM candidate.
Some of Votto’s plans are unthinkable in the current club’s framework. He stated that he would trade Elly De La Cruz in return for prospects. Under Krall, the Reds haven’t been able to sign the superstar to an extension, and the likelihood of that happening before he hits free agency after 2029 is dwindling.
Krall is already so unpopular with fans that perhaps he is shying away from the common sense move. Votto, on the other hand, is a franchise icon who just might be able to get away with trading De La Cruz.
If Votto were to become GM, his hiring would be akin to Buster Posey’s in San Francisco, although the latter joined the Giants’ ownership group before ascending to his current position. Votto, like Posey, is highly respected for his baseball IQ and accomplishments as a player.
Votto's analytical approach to the game would lend itself to the demands of an executive position. If the Reds don’t pounce on this possibility soon, he may find himself building a legacy with another franchise entirely.
