Hunter Greene trade rumors take confusing turn after latest Reds update

As of Thursday, reports from multiple MLB insiders suggested there was a 50% chance that the Cincinnati Reds were planning to trade Hunter Greene before the upcoming deadline. But according to USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale, the Reds are no longer entertaining the idea at all.

That seems like a dramatic shift within less than 24 hours, and one that may not be fully understood until after 6 p.m. ET next Monday. Greene's name has gained a lot of traction in recent days, and unless the Reds were completely underwhelmed by the offers they'd be receiving, it's hard to believe that they'd just cut off all trade talks altogether.

To be sure, trading Greene is no small task, and number of Reds fans have already shared their feelings about how such a drastic trade would set the franchise back yet again. Still others look at Greene's injury history and see the perfect opportunity for Cincinnati to make a blockbuster deal before he gets hurt again.

Just because one insider declares Greene is now off limits doesn't make it so. There's still more than 72 hours remaining before the trade deadline passes, and anything can happen if the right offer presents itself.

But what might that offer look like? Greene is a former All-Star who's signed to an extremely affordable contract for two more season with a team-option for 2029, and he's a bonafide ace when he's healthy.

It's the last part of that sentence that always gets brought up, but frankly it can't be ignored. It's what continues to keep Greene from reaching his full potential, and also continues to keep the fanbase frustrated. Everyone throughout Reds Country knows how valuable Greene can be, but the ole "the best ability is avail-ability" quote has become a running anthem for his time in the Queen City.

If Cincinnati is looking to trade Greene, it would need to a Godfather-like offer — one that Nick Krall and the Reds' braintrust can't refuse. Perhaps the team that misses out on two-time Cy Young Award-winner Tarik Skubal will make Krall and Co. that type of offer. But if Nightengale's reporting is to be believed, even that might not be enough.

Greene is a polarizing player, but there's little doubt that removing him from the team doesn't improve their chances to compete in 2027; which is something Krall has talked about numerous times over the past month.
