That didn't last long.

Bryan Price is out of a job, again. But this time, the former Cincinnati Reds manager was not fired. Price, who joined his longtime friend Bob Melvin as a member of the San Francisco Giants' coaching staff last year, stepped down as a the team's pitching coach. Price had been out of the dugout for quite some time before Melvin picked up the phone and invited Price to join him in the Bay Area.

But Price's return to his hometown team lasted just one season. Assistant pitching coach J.P. Martinez was named Price's replacement as the Giants continue to rebuild both their coaching staff and their front office.

Price took over the reins from Dusty Baker in 2014. Price's tenure as the Reds' skipper just so happened to coincide with a complete teardown of Cincinnati's roster. Outside of All-Star first baseman Joey Votto, every meaningful member from the Reds' playoff runs in 2010, 2012, and 2013 were traded or left via free agency.

As Reds fans will undoubtedly remember, the rebuild gave Price little to work with and his record reflected that. Through his first four seasons at the helm, Price never had a winning record. After the Reds began the 2018 season with a record of 3-15, Price was handed his walking papers after just 18 games. Jim Riggleman took over as the Reds interim manager, before Cincinnati settled on David Bell the following offseason.

Perhaps Price saw the writing on the wall after Farhan Zaidi was let go after the Giants missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season. San Francisco replaced Zaidi with longtime backstop and future Hall of Famer Buster Posey. The Giants have begun to rework both the front office and the coaching staff this offseason.

The Reds have reworked their coaching staff as well after firing Bell and inserting Terry Francona as the new manager. Both Cincinnati and San Fran will be looking to get back to the postseason in 2025, and both squads will have new leadership in the dugout.
