Every Hunter Greene trade rumor points toward one unavoidable Reds' decision

The Cincinnati Reds are rumored to be listening to trade offers for starting pitcher Hunter Greene. Some MLB insiders have even gone as far as to suggest that the chances of Greene being traded before Monday's deadline re 50-50.

These Reds rumors centered around Greene are nothing new, frankly. Several local beat writers were drumming up speculation at this time last year, and the trade chatter continued into the offseason.

For the most part, Greene has let his play on the field do the talking. He politely, yet firmly, dismissed the Cincinnati Enquirer's Gordon Wittenmyer while speaking at a postgame press conference on Friday, during which he was asked about the team's plans at the trade deadline.

"To rack my brain over something I can't control, and to put energy and put stress into it doesn't make any sense to me," Greene said after his six-inning effort on Friday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The question isn't if the Reds will trade Hunter Greene, but when?

There's every reason to believe that Greene will remain with the Reds past the 6 p.m. ET deadline on Monday. Though Cincinnati has received offers, including a supposed package from the Boston Red Sox, the price tag for his services is said to be extremely high; as it should be.

Though his salary nearly doubles next season, Greene is signed through 2028, and a $15.3 million payday isn't a huge cost for a pitcher of his caliber. His deal also contains a $21 million club-option for 2029.

But Greene's contract is only part of the equation. While there's a lot of speculation involved in this sentiment, most would probably agree that there seems to be a disconnect between Greene and upper management within Reds organization.

These beat writers and national reporters (for the most part) don't just make things up out of thin air. That would suggest that someone within the front office has been feeding information to the media, and that there's an obvious rift. Can the relationship be salvaged? That remains to be seen.

If Greene survives the August 3 deadline — and nothing changes in the Reds front office — most fans should expect to hear these same trade rumors once the 2026 season comes to a close.

The impending CBA dispute, which will likely result in a lockout, could change the outlook of the entire offseason. But once business is back up and running, Greene will is likely to be back on the trade block once again.

Unless something drastic changes, the 2026 season could be Greene's last in a Reds uniform.
