Eugenio Suárez wants to return in 2027, and the Reds should be all ears

Eugenio Suárez is beloved by his teammates and throughout the city of Cincinnati. He's beloved almost everywhere he goes, but the players in the Cincinnati Reds clubhouse and fans in the Queen City have always enjoyed having Geno around.

Though Suàrez's reunion with the Reds did not go as planned this season (.212/.307/.433 with 26 homers, 74 RBI, and 102 wRC+), he made his intentions known — he wants to return in 2027.

“Of course, you always want to be back," Suárez told MLB.com. "I’m not going to change my thoughts. They obviously know I want to be back, but we never know. I’ll just let them do their job and we’re ready to come back if they give me the opportunity to be back.”

The Reds signed Suárez to a one-year, $15 million contract this past winter, and the deal contains a $16 million mutual-option for next season. Given his disappointing performance this season, he'd be a fool not to pick up his end of the deal. It's highly unlikely, however, that the Reds exercise their end the bargain.

Nevertheless, there are other ways for both sides to come to an understanding and bring a quick and decisive end to all this drama. Much like the Reds did with Brent Suter following the 2024 season, they could renegotiate a new deal with Suárez before free agency even begins.

Suárez's power-packed performance in 2025 (.228/.298/.526 with 49 home runs and 118 RBI ) was impressive, but he still lingered on the free-agent market longer than most observers assumed he would. Given his underwhelming performance this season —and the impending lockout — Suárez might not know his future destination for several months if he enters free agency this offseason.

Geno's been a creature of habit throughout his career. He's known four organizations during his time major leagues, but his most recent stint with the Reds marked the second time he's played for a franchise twice. He also returned to the Seattle Mariners in 2025 after playing for them in 2022 and 2023, and there were rumors linking him to the Detroit Tigers at last year's trade deadline. In short, Geno likes what he likes.

What might a renegotiated deal for Reds slugger Eugenio Suárez look like?

That bodes well for the Reds if they'd like to retain Suárez for the 2027 season. His second-half surge gives rise to the notion that he can still be a productive middle-of-the-order bat, and Cincinnati could conceivably buy-low.

Josh Bell, coming off a season in which he hit .237/.325/.417 with 22 home runs and 63 RBI for the Washington Nationals, signed a one-year, $7 million deal with the Minnesota Twins last offseason. Reds fans will remember Austin Hays' .266/.315/.453 performance during Cincinnati's 2025 campaign. That netted him a one-year, $6 million offer from the Chicago White Sox last winter.

It's safe to assume Suárez could secure something similar — maybe with some incentives or even a team-option that includes a buyout for 2028. The point being, re-signing Suárez wouldn't cost an arm and a leg, and if both sides are interested in a reunion, it would be prudent work out a deal before free agency begins in November.

There's been a lot of talk about the need for a veteran presence in the clubhouse. It's doubtful you'll find a better fit for the Reds than Eugenio Suárez.
