A new, but familiar, name showed up on the Cincinnati Reds’ radar during the General Manager Meetings in Las Vegas. Devin Williams, who bedeviled Cincinnati during his six seasons with the division-rival Milwaukee Brewers, could be in the mix for the Reds’ closer job, but the partnership may hinge on Williams’ willingness to sign a one-year deal.
In a typical year, Williams would be a shoo-in for a short-term contract. He struggled during his walk year with the New York Yankees (4-6 4.70 ERA) and would likely relish the chance to prove that he is still a dominant force.
However, the looming expiration of the CBA and likelihood of a lockout in 2027 may push him to negotiate a long-term deal before any salary cap can be put in place. Still, at least The Athletic believes he could be swayed by a one-year contract.
Former Yankees reliever Devin Williams would be a great fit for the Reds' bullpen
Perhaps more daunting for the Reds will be Williams’ salary. The Athletic put his cost at $18 million. ESPN went with a $15 million AAV. Both of these projections far exceed his market value after a season that saw him absolutely collapse under the bright lights of New York. The Reds don’t have the budgetary room to match those projected numbers and add a bat to the lineup via free agency.
Unfortunately for the Reds, teams also don’t seem to be scared off by Williams’ down year in 2025. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox, both clubs that can outspend Cincinnati, are reportedly in on the closer. Williams' Midwest roots, however, could also play in the Reds' favor.
In short, the stars would have to align for Williams to land in Cincinnati. But if he does, the right-hander could be the difference-maker on the 2026 Reds team. He has been spectacular in his 16 games at Great American Ball Park, holding the Reds to a .091 batting average and logging 33 strikeouts in 55 at-bats. In a bullpen full of young prospects and unproven performers, Williams would be the perfect fit.
