Cincinnati Reds fireballer Chase Burns just showed fans (and future opponents) what's in store for them in 2026. The right-hander started Tuesday's exhibition game against the Milwaukee Brewers and struck out seven batters over five innings while throwing 68 pitches (53 of of which landed for strikes). Burns looks ready for his second season in the big leagues.

Burns' spring has been filled with ups and downs. From the outset, he was in competition with Brandon Williamson and Rhett Lowder for the final spot in the Reds' Opening Day rotation. Injuries to Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo moved Burns from the fringe of the roster to firmly entrenched at the center of the rotation.

According to Gordon Wittnemyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Burns will make his 2026 debut on Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. At this time last year, the flamethrower was set to begin his professional career at High-A Dayton. He's certainly skyrocketed up the ladder since last spring.

Chase Burns is essential to the Reds' success in 2026

After just 13 minor-league appearances last season, the Reds called Burns up to the big leagues. While his performance certainly warranted a promotion, his Major League call-up was done out of necessity more than anything else.

Chase Petty struggled in his MLB debut, and Cincinnati was without both Hunter Greene and Wade Miley. The team needed a spark, and they got it in the form of their 2024 first-round pick.

Burns was dominant during his debut against the New York Yankees, going five innings and racking up eight punch outs. He struggled severely during his second Major League outing, however. After giving up seven runs on five hits to the Boston Red Sox, Burns was lifted before the first inning was over. He regrouped, however, and recorded 37 strikeouts over his next four starts and posted a 2.32 FIP.

Burns suffered a minor injury near the end of the season, and when he returned to the active roster, was working exclusively out of the bullpen. In five relief appearances, he struck out 10 and walked three while posting a 2.00 ERA and 3.36 FIP.

The 23-year-old will be counted upon to deliver for the Reds in 2026. With Greene and Lodolo on the IL, Cincinnati needs another one of their young hurlers to join Andrew Abbott at the top of the rotation until their stars return. Burns certainly has the arsenal and pedigree to be that type of pitcher, and his performance on Tuesday was further proof that he's ready to meet the moment.
