Cam Collier is currently rehabbing at the Cincinnati Reds' complex in Arizona. One of the top young players in the Reds farm system, Collier was on hand last week to watch the ACL Reds take on the Texas Rangers' ACL squad. Collier had a front-row seat to Tyson Lewis' two-run home run and his expression said it all.
In this video, you can see Lewis absolutely crush a ball that reportedly came off the bat at almost 115 mph and travelled 434 feet. Lewis' bat speed is ridiculous, and as soon as the crack was heard, the entire ACL Reds' dugout erupted in celebration.
Collier's head pops up out of the dugout, and he then steps over the railing with this hands on top of his head in utter shock. Collier couldn't believe that Lewis just uncorked a missile into the right-center field bleachers. Lewis' teammates congratulated him upon his return to the dugout with high fives all around.
Cam Collier’s reaction just put Reds prospect Tyson Lewis on the map
Lewis was the 51st-overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft. The 2024 Gatorade Nebraska High School Player of the Year signed for a little over $3 million last summer after the Reds took him in Round 2. This was the second year in a row that Cincinnati took a high school shortstop in the second round — Sammy Stafura was the Reds' second-round pick in 2023.
Lewis did not play professional baseball last season. It's becoming more and more common for the Reds to keep their young draftees in Arizona at the outset and then deploy them the following season. Reds fans didn't see Chase Burns take the field until this season, and the same held true for Rhett Lowder. Stafura appeared in just a dozen games for the ACL Reds in 2023.
Lewis isn't considered a top-100 prospect just yet, but if he keeps crushing balls like he did last week, it won't take long for scouts and other talent evaluators to notice. Lewis was the 39th ranked draft prospect last summer, so Cincinnati may have gotten a steal taking him at No. 51.
Lewis will likely stay at shortstop, and could turn into a fine backup plan for current star Elly De La Cruz. Lewis has a ways to go before making it to the big leagues, but the timing may line up well in the event that De La Cruz tests the free agent waters after the 2029 season. Keep your eye on Lewis as the 2025 season moves along.
