7 Reds players who could earn September call-ups following Michael Toglia's arrival

The Cincinnati Reds made a notable move earlier this week when they promoted Michael Toglia to the active roster. The former Colorado Rockies slugger had spent the entire season down at Triple-A Louisville, but after crushing 22 home runs in the minor leagues, the Reds decided to give him a chance to prove himself in the big leagues.

With Toglia now part of the Reds roster, that's one less player the team will have to promote next month. Rosters expand from 26 to 28 players on September 1, and there's always a number of players who are just waiting for that elusive call-up.

Most of the names on this list you already know — they were part of the Reds roster earlier this season. But there's at least one, and maybe more, who might be a bit of a surprise.

7 Reds players who could receive a September call-up in 2026

Zach Maxwell, Reds pitcher

Zach Maxwell has already been up a couple times this season, but he's been pitching in Triple-A since the end of June. The biggest reason Big Sugar has yet to make it back to the big leagues is his lack of command, and it's still haunting him in the minors. Since returning to the Louisville Bats in June, the hard-throwing righty has 21 punch outs over 20⅓ innings of work, but he also walked15 batters.

Edwin Arroyo, Reds infielder

Like Maxwell, Edwin Arroyo has already spent on the major league roster this season. But Arroyo's introduction to the big leagues was somewhat muted. In 44 games, he hit just .244/.286/.257 and failed to record a home run. Since returning to the minors, he has three homers and has exclusively played second base. He's very likely to return to the Reds' roster next month.

Connor Phillips, Reds pitcher

There was time when it looked like Connor Phillips was turning a corner, but the free passes have caught to him once again. Phillips had a 21.1% walk rate in 25 relief appearances with the Reds earlier this year, and since returning to the minors, that number looks eerily similar (20.2% BB rate). Cincinnati might give Phillips one more chance to prove himself next month, but the odds could be stacked against him.

Will Banfield, Reds catcher

Will Banfield was added to the Reds' 40-man roster earlier this season, but he's yet to be called up to the big leagues. If the Reds enter the month of September with no shot to return to the postseason, don't be surprised to see Banfield receive a call-up in order to give Tyler Stephenson and Jose Trevino a break behind the plate.

Chase Petty, Reds pitcher

Chase Petty may receive a call-up before next month, but if he's still in Triple-A once the calendar flips to September, it'll be a little surprising. He's had an up-and-down year with the Reds, but has looked much more comfortable than he did in 2025. Working as a starter in the minor leagues, the right-hander could give Cincinnati some length during the final month of the season.

Michael Chavis, Reds infielder

Michael Chavis will be a name to watch next month. Aside from Toglia, Chavis has put up the best numbers among the major league veterans playing at Triple-A Louisville this season. In 92 games, he's hitting .249/.325/.480 with 21 home runs, 68 RBI, and a 104 wRC+.

Chase Solesky, Reds pitcher

Chase Solesky has one major league game under his belt, and the Reds may want to get a longer look next month. The 28-year-old right-hander was plucked off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays in early-August and could add some length to the Reds' bullpen in September.
