The Cincinnati Reds are no stranger to seeing their young players step up in big way. Last year, Elly De La Cruz became a household name, going to his first All-Star Game while also leading the league in stolen bases. But the Reds still have a lot of young talent in the organization that has yet to tap into their true potential.
The Reds are unlikely to be big spenders during free agency this offseason, meaning that new manager Terry Francona will likely have to rely on some of the developing, young players in 2025. Which Reds players, 25 years old or younger, could break out next season?
5 young players who could break out for the Reds in 2025
Rhett Lowder, Reds pitcher
During the final month of the 2024 season, Reds fans got a preview of what former first-round pick Rhett Lowder could do. While the right-hander struggled with free passes (10.9% walk rate), Lowder was always able to limit the damage, as evidenced by his minuscule 1.17 ERA. Lowder will likely be part of the Opening Day starting rotation and could end the season as Cincinnati's No. 2 starter behind Reds' ace Hunter Greene.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Reds infielder
It was an injury-riddled campaign for Christian Encarnacion-Strand during his sophomore season, but the slugger was back on the field earlier this month while playing in the Arizona Fall League and will be looking to compete as regular in the Reds lineup next season. Encarnacion-Strand has light tower power and could post 30-plus home runs in 2025.
Rece Hinds, Reds outfielder
Speaking of power, will Reds outfielder Rece Hinds be given a chance to shine under Francona's leadership? While the new Reds' skipper has historically been one to prioritize contact over power, Hinds' bat is much too potent to just rot on the bench. The strikeouts were a problem in 2024, but if Hinds can cut down his strikeout to below 30%, the 24-year-old could force his way into the lineup.
Noelvi Marte, Reds infielder
Those Reds fans who've already given up on Noelvi Marte may want to reconsider their stance. An injury last winter coupled with the 80-game PED suspension derailed Marte's rookie season. But Marte has all the tools to be a star in the big leagues. If he can put the defensive miscues behind him, that will go a long way toward Marte getting into the lineup with regularity. If given an opportunity next season, Marte could break out in a big way, but it's critical for him to have a strong showing during spring training.
Chase Petty, Reds pitcher
Let's step away from the 40-man roster for a moment and focus on an up-and-coming player. Chase Petty has been in the Reds' farm system for three years now, and it would seem that his big league debut could be coming next season. The right-hander has an electric fastball, but it's his developing two-seamer that could get his noticed in 2025.
