Last season, both Hunter Greene and Elly De La Cruz became first-time All-Stars. De La Cruz took Major League Baseball by storm and was a household name by the time the Midsummer Classic rolled around last July. Though Greene was selected as an injury replacement, there's no doubt that the Reds' ace earned his first trip to the All-Star Game.
Both De La Cruz and Greene will undoubtedly be in line to return to the All-Star festivities this season. De La Cruz is widely seen as a breakout star and one of the most electric players in the sport. Greene had a Cy Young-caliber season going until an injury derailed him late last year. Greene, however, rebounded nicely and returned to the finish out his 2024 campaign with the best numbers of his young career.
While De La Cruz and Greene got the monkey off their back in 2024, there are several deserving Reds players who could make the trip to Atlanta this July. Which four Reds players could become first-time All-Stars in 2025?
4 Reds players who could become first-time All-Stars in 2025
Spencer Steer, Reds infielder/ outfielder
This may be a bit presumptuous, but Steer's bat could be among the best on the Reds roster this season. Steer suffered a bit of a down-year in 2024, but was still able to crank 20 homers and swipe 25 bags, all while learning a new position on the fly.
Steer maintains a good eye at the plate (11% walk rate) and doesn't chase many balls outside the strike zone, but the Reds will be looking for Steer to up his barrel rate in 2025. If he can square up more baseballs during the upcoming season, Steer have a great chance to make a trip to Truist Park later this summer.
Matt McLain, Reds second baseman
McLain was an easy pick to be an All-Star in 2024, but a shoulder injury during spring training derailed his entire campaign. During his rehab McLain suffered an oblique injury and missed the entire season. But after a stint in the Arizona Fall League, McLain proved that he was ready to return to the field in 2025, and is looking to make up for lost time.
Francona has already dubbed McLain the starting second baseman. The former first-rounder was arguably the Reds' best player in 2023 and will be looking to duplicate that success in what he hopes will be his first full season in the big leagues. There's zero doubt that McLain could post a 20/20 season in 2025, and it's not a stretch to think he could match former Reds' great Barry Larkin's 30/30 season.
Nick Lodolo, Reds left-handed pitcher
Lodolo has ace-caliber stuff. After seeing Greene finally break through in 2024, there's no reason to think that Lodolo can't do the same in 2025. It's never been about Lodolo's talent, but rather his ability to remain healthy. Reds fans continue to wait for Lodolo to avoid the injury bug, but he's yet to surpass 115 innings pitched.
Lodolo made four trips to the IL in 2024. If the southpaw can finally put together a healthy campaign, the rest of his game will take care of itself. Lodolo's stuff is downright nasty, with many comparing his to last year's Cy Young Award winner, Chris Sale. Mimicking Sale's 2024 performance would certainly help him punch a flight to Atlanta in a few months.
Tyler Stephenson, Reds catcher
Stephenson has an uphill battle, but there's nothing he can do to control it. There are a ton of offensive-minded catchers in the National League. J.T. Realmuto (Philadelphia Phillies), William Contreras (Milwaukee Brewers), and Will Smith (Los Angeles Dodgers) all have the upper-hand when it comes to All-Star voting.
But Stephenson shouldn't be counted out completely. The Reds' starting catcher finally put together a solid season; something the Cincinnati faithful have been hoping to see for quite some time. If Stephenson can replicate his success from 2024, there's an outside chance that he could make a push for the All-Star Game ion 2025.
