Reds Country is holding out hope that Nick Krall isn't done adding to Cincinnati's roster. Though the Cincinnati Reds have made some upgrades this offseason, you'd still have squint pretty hard to see this year's team finishing much above .500. An injury here or a stretch of bad luck there could quickly torpedo the Reds' hopes of returning to the playoffs in 2025.
The Reds are supposed have some extra cash on hand after agreeing to a new TV deal over a week ago. The new agreement with FanDuel Sports Network could thrust the Redlegs back into the free agent market — somewhere they've been afraid to go this winter.
Believe it or not, though we're less than a month away from the Reds descending upon Goodyear, Arizona, there are still some impact free agents that could fit nicely on Cincinnati's roster. While it's anyone's guess as to why these free agents are still available, the fact that they are should be music to the Reds' ears.
4 good free agent fits for Reds that are somehow still available
Randal Grichuk, free agent outfielder
No free agent is a better fit for the Reds this offseason than Randal Grichuk. Cincinnati needs to add a right-handed hitting outfielder to pair with the left-handed hitting Jake Fraley. Grichuk's impressive .319/.386/.528 slash line against lefties in 2024 would appear to be the perfect compliment to Fraley who hit .284/.341/.402 against right-handers last season.
Buck Farmer, free agent pitcher
It's only surprising that Buck Farmer is still available in free agency because the Reds haven't signed him to a contract just yet. Farmer fits so perfectly with the Cincinnati relief corps, and has been nothing but sensational during his three-year run in the Queen City. This feels like a deal that should have already been made, but if the Reds aren't careful, another club will eventually sneak in and pluck Farmer off the open market. His performance in 2024 was woefully underrated.
Jurickson Profar, free agent outfielder
One would assume that an All-Star season would get you plenty of offers on the open market. But Jurickson Profar has been languishing in free agency this winter despite posting an .839 OPS and 24 round trippers in 2024. Profar is an 11-year veteran, but still only 31 years old and would give Cincinnati's outfield a major boost next season. His price tag, however, would force the Reds to hand over $40-plus million on the open market.
Jakob Junis, free agent pitcher
The Reds bullpen looks rather shaky at the moment, doesn't it? The trio of Alexis Dìaz, Brent Suter, and Emilio Pagán all had up-and-down performances last season, leaving new Reds' manager Terry Francona without many reliable arms in the bullpen heading into Opening Day. After Jakob Junis joined the Reds at the trade deadline, he proved to be an indispensable piece of the Cincinnati pitching staff last season. The Reds need that long-man in the bullpen, and Junis is a perfect fit.
