After an off-day on Thursday, the Cincinnati Reds are back at it with a visit to Coors Field to take on the Colorado Rockies on Friday. Cincinnati will be looking to close out their 10-day, nine-game road trip with a series win, and there aren't many teams who offer a better chance to do that than the Rockies.
Colorado is in the midst of a full-on rebuild and are stuck in the NL West basement. As such, the Rockies have a number of veterans on the roster who are helping to aid in the development of Colorado's young talent.
As luck would have it, there are several former Reds among the group. During the upcoming series, the Cincinnati faithful are sure to recognize a handful of former Reds players—some of whom were fan-favorites during their tenure in the Queen City.
3 former Reds who'll be in the opposing dugout during the upcoming series vs. Rockies
Kyle Farmer, former Reds infielder
Reds fans won't find a more recognizable face in the Rockies dugout than former shortstop Kyle Farmer. One of the most popular Reds during his time in Cincinnati, Farmer signed with Colorado during the offseason after spending the past few seasons with the Minnesota Twins.
Farmer was supposed to be the stopgap option at shortstop for Jose Barrero, but the former Reds infield prospect never panned out. The Georgia native became a fixture in the Reds lineup from 2021-2022 and was well regarded for his versatility, grit, and blue-collar work ethic. Farmer has been manning second base for the Rockies this season.
Nick Martini, former Reds outfielder
Journeyman outfielder Nick Martini landed with Cincinnati in 2023, and after an impressive showing in the minors that year, earned a late-season call-up to the active roster. Martini survived the offseason roster crunch, and turned in an unforgettable performance on Opening Day in 2024.
Martini launched the first home of the Reds' 2024 season with a two-run blast in the bottom of the second inning. But he wasn't done. The slugger sent a second homer over the fence in right field to expand the Reds' lead and help them emerge victorious on Opening Day last year. Unfortunately, that was as good as it would ever get, and after completely falling off the map, Martini was let go this past offseason. He latched on with Colorado and will be in the Rockies outfield for the upcoming series.
Jimmy Herget, former Reds pitcher
Jimmy Herget made his major league debut for the Reds back in July of 2019. Few fans will remember Herget, as his time in Cincinnati was short-lived. After logging just over six innings with a 4.26 ERA in 2019, Herget was designated for assignment during the offseason.
Herget was claimed off waivers by the Texas Rangers and bounced back and forth between the major and minor leagues until he was finally cut loose again in 2021. Herget has played for the Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, and Atlanta Braves in recent years, and joined Colorado this past offseason. The Pitching Ninja, Rob Friedman, teasingly calls Heget "The Human Glitch" because of his funky delivery.
